No Holly For Christmas - Julie N. Ford

Publisher:  Whiskey Creek Press
Pages:  390
Source:  Received a copy for review
Genre:  Adult, Romance, Suspense

Here is the excerpt:

Widowed, practically penniless, and banished to an Alabama rural community, ex-socialite- turned social worker Holly Cavanaugh Winter is dreading the approaching holiday season. However, her angst is not due to her husband's untimely death last December 25th, but because of a secret, one she keeps locked deep in her heart, that could reveal itself unless she can find a way to avoid Christmas.

On special assignment for the DA, defense attorney, Brian McAlister has all but given up on relationships when his path unavoidably crosses Holly’s. However, love at first sight quickly turns frigid when Holly is pulled into a manhunt for an accused murderer who now has his sights set on her. With his case unraveling, Brian finds himself tasked with keeping Holly and her two daughters safe, while bringing an assassin, and the powerful man who hired him, to justice.

My thoughts:

I don’t like mushy-gushy romance.  This book is anything but that.  I will always read suspense or thrillers with romance thrown in.  This was my first opportunity to read a book by Julie N. Ford.  However, it will definitely not be my last time.  Julie has created a story that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat.  The characters are very believable.  Reading this book was like sitting and watching a movie where you see the villain sneaking up on the unsuspecting victim and you want to shout at them “watch out”.

Attorney Brian McAlister is filling in for his father, a prominent attorney, while he is in the hospital.  Brian doesn’t care much for his new partner Margo.  However, circumstances and a case bring him together with Holly Cavanaugh Winter, Margo’s sister.  Both Holly and Brian can feel the electricity between them.  Margo tells them both from the beginning why this won’t work out.  Brian has been married multiple times and really doesn’t trust his judgment.  He is still holding a candle for an ex-girlfriend Josie, who just happens to be married to a judge.  Holly no longer trusts men due to the betrayal of her rich husband right before he died.    This is the set up for a great read.  You know they are going to fall in love.  The question is what can the author throw in their path to make this journey seem impossible yet make the slowly building bonds of their love even stronger.  In this case, the author has thrown in a high-powered businessperson who thinks if he threatens what Brian loves most then he will get things to go his way.  To say more would just ruin it.  I believe this is a book most people will enjoy.  I know I kept wondering who would survive and at what cost.

I have to say that Margo, Holly and Brian were not my favorite characters.  They were very likeable.  My favorites were two characters that played a major role in Holly’s life.  When Holly goes from living in the most desirable area and shopping in the most expensive shops to living in a middle class area and shopping at Wal-Mart, you know there has to be culture shock.  Enter Wandean and Deidra-Belle.  These two women are the best example of the lifestyle Holly has always tried to avoid.  Yet, when Holly needs a shoulder to cry on or someone to lift her spirits, these women and their quirky ways are the perfect people to turn to.

I am recommending this book not only to the readers of my blog but also to those I work with that love to read.  Every now and then, you need a book that will put you in the spirit of Christmas, yet give you a taste of romance and suspense.  This book has it all.

My Brother's Shadow - Monika Schröder

Publisher:  Farrar, Straus and Giroux
Pages:  240
Genre:  Historical Fiction, Young Adult, Middle Grade
Source:  I received a copy from the author

From Goodreads:
As World War I draws to a close in 1918, German citizens are starving and suffering under a repressive regime. Sixteen-year-old Moritz is torn. His father died in the war and his older brother still risks his life in the trenches, but his mother does not support the patriotic cause and attends subversive socialist meetings. While his mother participates in the revolution to sweep away the monarchy, Moritz falls in love with a Jewish girl who also is a socialist. When Moritz’s brother returns home a bitter, maimed war veteran, ready to blame Germany’s defeat on everything but the old order, Moritz must choose between his allegiance to his dangerously radicalized brother and those who usher in the new democracy.

My Review:
I am not sure what it is about German history that I love but I enjoy reading books about it.   My father was stationed there after the wall went up.  He used to talk about the beauty of the country and the Black Forest.  I have been real interested in anything to do with Berlin as well.  This is the first book I have read that occurred before Hitler.  I learned a lot.  If you want to read something about German History then you need to pick up books by this author.  She is able to take history and craft a story based on historical events that will stay with you a long time.

I could not imagine what Hans' life must have been like.  He was raised to believe in his Kaiser.  His father fought for the Kaiser and lost his life.  His brother was such a staunch supporter that he would listen to no one.  Hans works for a printer.  His country is changing.  The Kaiser had made a statement that the boys would be home from the war before the leaves changed color and then four years had gone by.  Poor people were starving while the wealthy could buy what they wanted.  Gangs constantly  stole from the rich.  Women had to work in ammunition factories.  The general public decided they'd had enough.  Women wanted the right to vote and so socialist parties popped up everywhere.  Hans' mother and sister have joined.  Not only has his mother joined she is considered a leader in these illegal  activities.  The police are after her.  Hans has always sided with the Kaiser.  As he sees the injustice of a wealthy man eating a sandwich in front of a starving child he begins to agree with his mother.  He doesn't really make his decision until he goes to visit his brother who has returned from the war an injured and bitter soldier.  He now blames all of the countries problems on the Socialists and the Jews.  Of course you knew there had to be a twist here.  Hans has fallen in love with a young girl who is a supporter of the Socialist party and she is a Jew on top of all of that.
The author's notes explain how the events of this time set things up for the rise of Hitler.  There is so much suspense here.  This is a perfect book for kids in middle school and up to learn about this time period.  It is an excellent book to have discussions about consequences of our decisions and how those decisions can have life altering consequences.
I would recommend you check out Monika's other books.  This will make the third one I've added to my shelves at school.  I have several of her others on my wish list.  This is a must read book.

Young Adult Giveaway Hop

Coming January 27-31  The Young Adult Giveaway  Hop.  This is hosted by:
I Am A Reader, Not A Writer and Down the Rabbit Hole.  This will be a giveaway for a Young Adult Book. Come back in January to see what book I will be giving away.

Student Saturday: Soul Surfer - Bethany Hamilton

Student Reviewer:  Lucretia
Publisher:  MTV Books
Pages:  240
Genre:  Young Adult, Biography

This book was a book about Bethany Hamilton.  Bethany Hamilton is a famous surfer that had her arm bitten off by a shark while she was surfing.  Bethany had written this story in her own words which made it fun to read her own opinions.

Bethany Hamilton was the main character.  She has two brothers named Noah and Timmy.  Her parents are Tom and Cheri.  Alana was Bethany’s best friend and Ginger was her first pet.  The setting took place in many places.  Bethany lives in Hawaii and that is where the book started.  It followed her wherever she went, so when she went to New York for shows and interviews we went there.  When the family was in New York they decided to visit family in New Jersey.

The only connections I got from Bethany were when she surfed.  I felt the waves splash in my face almost, and felt the joy when she got to surf a wave in.  I loved this book.  Well, I think it’s because I love Bethany Hamilton.  This book was so well written it actually felt like you were there.  You can feel her feelings and I loved how I could agree with her opinions.

This book is definitely not for anyone.  The book talks about surfing all the time and there is a lot of surf talk.  Bethany is a Christian and all she does is look at the Christian side.  She respects everyone.

Every now and then, a book comes along that you just can’t put down.  I tell my students that if they find a book that takes them on a visual trip as well as an emotional rollercoaster, then they have truly found an awesome book.  That pretty much describes this book.  This is one of those books that once you start reading you can forget about obligations to your family because you won’t be able to put it down.  It has a bit of science fiction tied into a military thriller, along with just a touch of romance to make this a well-rounded book.

Jake Bronson only has a few weeks to live.  He is having an MRI done when an earthquake happens.  To me this was terrifying.  The last MRI that I had needed to be done in two stages.  After the first stage, they went looking for me afraid I had left.  I have claustrophobia and felt as if I could not breathe.  I was able to relate to this character a little too much in this instance.  When they are finally able to get Jake out of the machine he discovers he has enhanced powers.  He is determined to use these powers; in whatever time he has left to stop a terrorist attack.  Throw into all of this the rescue of Francesca, a psychologist who works with autistic children and to whom Jake is romantically attached and you can see the plot thickening.  The characters are very believable.  The descriptions as you travel with Jack from California to Italy and other destinations are so vivid that you feel as if you are right there with him.  I’ve not traveled out of the country yet I feel I have traveled to these destinations.  It is obvious that the author has done major research on weaponry, maybe drawing on his own background experiences.  I didn’t feel like I was in over my head in that area.  I actually enjoyed it.

For me if you are going to have a wonderfully fleshed out protagonist then you must have an equally wonderful antagonist.  Luciano Battista is that person.  To me his name even made me feel like he was evil.  His character was a great opposite to Jake’s character.  It kept the pace going.  There were areas where the imagination had to be stretched a little.  I am one of those rare people that says bring it on.  I grew up stretching my imagination, as a child so there is no reason not to continue that.

I would definitely recommend this book to everyone I know.  I believe it has something for everyone.  This is an author to watch for.  His second book in the series comes out in December so just take a deep breath and tell yourself that you can wait for it, because after all you don’t really have a choice.

“The Adventures of Daniel and Christen”

Author:  Cameron and Delaine Taylor
Illustrator: Dawn Phillips
Genre:  Children's Beginning Reader
Source:  Received a review copy from R & D Children's Books

The Adventures of Daniel and Christen is a cute picture book.  In the beginning we find Daniel lying in his back yard staring up at the clouds.  He is joined by his best friend Christen.  This immediately brought to my mind the endless summer days my sisters and I would lay in the yard looking at the sky and shapes of the clouds.  So now I've started the book with a warm fuzzy feeling.  Suddenly the boys see pirates and they hide.  The pirates are looking for treasure.  The boys are captured and put in an old cage.  If that isn't terrifying enough for young boys, they find a purple polka-dotted python staring them down.  The python gets tied up in knots and the boys escape.  Suddenly they are on the back of a sea-monster.  Then they are shaken awake by Daniel's mother.  The boys had fallen asleep.  As they are walking back to the house they step on something and realize it is gold coins.  You are left to wonder, was it really all a dream?
I had only two small problems with the book and that is because I am an adult, whereas a child would probably not find this a problem.  The first problem is the story takes you from the boys lying in the grass to hiding behind a bush from the pirates.  It seems the next step should have been they heard the pirates then hid.  My other problem was with them getting a drink of ocean water.  These were my only problems with the book.  It was a great story line otherwise.  The illustrations are absolutely wonderful. They are so bright and cheerful.  Kids will spend hours just looking at all that is going on in the pictures. I am looking forward to sharing this book with my grandkids when they come for Thanksgiving this next week.  I am blessed each Thanksgiving with grandkids who want me to sit and read to them.  This is one of those books I will thankfully share.  Although this is a picture book geared toward beginning readers it is a book I can use in my middle school classroom.  There were examples of alliteration and other types of figurative language within it's short pages and would make it easier for students to understand those elements.

I would like to thank R & D Children's Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.  I look forward to reading more from them.

Student Saturday - The Road to Paris - Nikki Grimes

Publisher:  Putnam Juv.
Pages:  160
         Genre:  Middle Grade, Realistic Fiction
         Reviewer:  Farhad

I chose not to include the entire review because it contained spoilers.  I'm glad I had the opportunity to read Farhad's review because I had never heard of the book and it is now on my TBR list.

This book was about a girl named Paris who is shy, kind, caring, and smart.  This book is also about a boy named Malcom who is Paris' brother.  Malcom is kind, caring and he loves his sister paris.  Paris lives in a foster home where she is abused and barely gets food.  ONe day an adult named Mrs. Boone who is the one that runs the foster home slapped Paris back and forth because she disobeyed an order from her, so she locked Paris in a closet for one day.

Paris' brother found out that Mrs. Boon locked Paris in a closet and he found the key and opened the closet and saw Paris weeping and crying for help.  Paris was relieved that Malcom came to save her.  Paris and Malcom decided to run away.  Malcom stole some money from Mrs. Boone's purse while she was sleeping so they would have money for food and transportation.

Paris and Malcom end up in several places and must make some important decisions.  What are they?  Will Paris end up back in a foster home?  Will they get caught for stealing the money?
If you like sad and emotional books then I recommend this book to you.  I was kind of sad while I read it.  The book reminds me of a time I lost my baby sister in Walmart, because in the book Paris loses her brother Malcom.

Underworlds: The Battle Begins - Tony Abbott

Publisher:  Scholastic, Inc
Pages:  112
Genre:  Elementary, Middle Grade, Myths, Fantasy, Mystery
Source:  I purchased the book for my school shelves

Owen Brown is a very conscientious kid.  He worries about things like the up-coming concert and the multiple projects he helps collect money for at school.  What he didn't think to worry about is the possibility of mythological worlds really existing.  That is until his best friend Dana Runson disappears.  After knocking her down in the hallway, the floor beneath her splits open belching smoke and fire and she is suddenly gone.  The last thing Dana tells him before she disappears through the floor is to go to her house and find a book.  He and his friends Jon and Sydney find the book and a whole lot more.  They enter a world of monsters and the Greek, Norse, Egyptian, and Babylonian Gods.  They first must save Dana from the underworld.  Whether they want to participate or not they are all now part of a Battle that has begun.

If you are loved the Percy Jackson series you will love this new series.  It is geared toward upper elementary and lower middle school.  As an adult I found it very engaging.  For the reluctant reader who really wanted to read the Percy Jackson series but found it to be too bulky  in page length, this would be the perfect series.

Never Knowing - Chevy Stevens

Publisher:  St. Martin's Press
Pages:  352
Source:  Copy received from publisher for review
Genre:  Adult Thriller

I read and thoroughly enjoyed Chevy Steven's book "Still Missing".  In my opinion this book took the suspense up a notch.
Sara Gallagher was adopted at a very young age.  Then her adoptive parents had two biological daughters.  Suddenly Sara begins to feel like an outsider.  As she grows older her desire to learn about her biological parents becomes so strong she hires a private investigator.  By this time she has a fiance, Evan, and a six year old daughter Ally.  Sara finally discovers who her mother is.  Her mother wants nothing to do with her.  She learns the reason for this is because of who her biological father is.  Sara's mother Julia has been in hiding for years.  She is the only surviving victim of John the Campsite Killer.  Sara learns that she was a product of that attack.  The police have been after him for a long time.  Suddenly, thanks to the press, he finds out about her and begins contacting her.  This puts her, Evan and Ally all in harms way.  The police want her to help them bring him in.  The tension in this book made it better than her first one.  I really enjoy reading work by this author.  I look forward to more.  Oh.... You're wondering if she helped the police or if her father tracked her down?  Maybe you should ask her therapist as this book is told similar to "Still Missing" through her conversations with her therapist.  Go ahead, track down a copy and read it now.

Final Hour – Andrew Klavan

Publisher:  Thomas Nelson
Pages:  352
Genre:  Young Adult, Action, Adventure
Source:  I receive this book from the publisher

Product Description
"You're not alone. You're never alone."

Charlie West has held on to that belief, but now he's starting to wonder. He went to bed one night an ordinary high-school kid. When he woke up, he was wanted for murder and hunted by a ruthless band of terrorists. He's been on the run ever since. Now he's stuck in prison, abandoned by his allies, trying desperately to stay a step ahead of vicious prison gangs and brutal guards. And a flash of returning memory tells him another terrorist strike is coming soon. A million people will die unless he does something. But what? He's stuck in a concrete cage with no way out and no one who can help. Charlie has never felt so alone-and yet he knows he can't give in or give up . . . not with the final hour ticking away.

This is the last book in the Homelander Series.  Charlie West is in prison.  He is accused of a crime he didn't commit.  Every day he is in prison is another day he must survive.  It seems everyone is after him.  The different groups such as the White Supremists,  the Islamic prisoners and the guards are all after him for one reason or another.
He's lost so much of his life, and memory throughout this series.  Just when he starts putting it all back together he ends up in prison and feels abandoned.  He starts questioning his faith like any normal human would do.  He realizes that is all he really has to hold on to at the time.

One of my students, after reading the first two books said, Wow this book has everything a kid could like in a book.  It has fighting, and running from the police and the bad guys.  As an adult I could say the story was a bit unbelievable.  However, as a teacher I have learned that my students want that element of unbelief.  They need to feel like teens can come out the hero at times.
Anxious to return to his normal teenage life, Charlie realizes he must fight the forces of evil to help save the residents of New York City before he can return home to his loving family and girlfriend.

Corinthia Falls - Kim Hutson

Publisher:  Outskirts Press
Pages:  410
Genre:  Christian Fiction
Source:  I received this book from Bostick Communications for review

Summary from Goodreads
This novel is exciting, fast-paced, and a very quick read. The reader will enjoy the attention to detail the author clearly works to provide. The characters are all unique and interesting in their quirks and qualities that work together to make the book work. The two different factions offer different views into the book's final message, the reader is not forced to choose between the two. The ending is satisfying and conclusive, the reader will not have to lie awake wondering. The reader will enjoy the dysfunctional part of the novel, every once and a while a novel with no perfect back-drop makes for a really good read-and shows the author's skill. This novel is recommended for adults who enjoy reading about books that come together in the end.

This is a book that is both thought provoking and humorous.  Too often in churches you have people "worshipping" separately.  There is no fellowship amongst them.  This book is told in two parts.  The first part is told from Tim's point of view, one of the many youth of the church.  The second half of the story is told from a writer who is working on a biography of Tim as a middle-aged adult.

Tim, most of the youth and the "regular" adults sit in the balcony.  He looks down on what he calls the "setters" and the "standers".  They are clearly divided.  The "Standers" are those who stand and raise their hands and shout.  On the right side of the church you have the "Setters" who sit to worship all the while shooting daggers at the "Standers".

Enter a traveling evangelist, former Green Beret Colonel Pavlos Lincoln.  He observes the discord of the church.  When they leave the church he locks the church up and puts his dog, who look like a bear, standing guard at the front of the church.  The next Sunday they hold service in the parking lot. There can't be the 3 divisions of the church here.  We see the people begin to change and miracles happening.

In the second half of the book a writer, who is working on a biography of Tim tells the story.  Tim and his best friends, TJ and Anthony have been working as missionaries for the Colonel.  We see more miracles brought about and we see how God works in our lives when we truly let him and let go of the little things.  This was a wonderful book and I believe not only Christians will enjoy it but many non-christians will as well.

Student Saturday: Scat - Carl Hiaasen

Publisher:  Knopf Books
Pages:  384
         Genre:  Middle Grade, Mystery
         Reviewer:  Felicia

This book will give you mixed feelings because it gave me mixed feelings.  These two kids, Nick Waters and Marta Gonzalez go on a field trip to Black Vine Swamp with their Biology class, and their feared biology teacher, Mrs. Startch.  Mrs Startch has some weird habits; she collects stuffed dead animals in her house.  Their field trip ends early because of what everybody thinks is a wildfire.  A student named Lizzy forgets her inhaler in the swamp and Mrs. Startch goes back into the swamp to get it.  Before Mrs. Startch goes back into the swamp she tells the bus to leave.  Nick and Marta got on the bus but they did not know that they weren't going to see their biology teacher for a while.  Meanwhile, other crazy things were happening in the swamp.  There was an oilman using government property for oil and a little panther cub missing its mom.  When their teacher  doesn't return, Nick and Marta begin to question where she may really be and what could have happened to her.  They become determined to figure out what was really going on.  The authorities are saying Mrs. Startch is on a family emergency but Nick and Marta know that Mrs. Startch has no family.

I honestly think that this book is a very good book.  I liked it beginning to end.  One of my favorite parts about this book was when they returned the baby panther cub to its mother.  I really think I had a connection with the character Nick.  His dad was in the hospital because of an injury on Iqur and my dad just go out of the hospital.  I would recommend this book to people who like adventure in every chapter and suspense on every page.  I would also recommend this book to people who like mystery.

November Giveaway Hop

Great News!  The November Giveaway Hop is officially underway.  This hop is hosted by:  I Am a Reader, Not a Writer and Tristi Pinkston. What is a blog hop?  You hop from one blog to another to see what is being offered as a giveaway.

My giveaway is open only to residents in the United States.  I'll be giving away several books this round so pay close attention.  All book blurbs are taken from Goodreads unless otherwise marked.  This post is quite long so when you've finished reading about the books, scroll to the bottom to find out how to enter.
.

For my younger audience, students, parents of young kids I offer the following:

Flat Stanley:  The Flying Chinese Wonders - Jeff Brown
Ouch! Stanley accidentally caused twin acrobats Yin and Yang to take a tumble, right before their Chinese New Year show. Yang's foot is broken—but luckily, Flat Stanley is flexible enough to take his place. To make up for his mistake, Stanley travels to China to help out—but can he learn all their amazing tricks in time?

Underworlds #1:  The battle Begins - Tony Abbott
There's something lurking under Owen's school. . . .
Owen Brown is your average fourth grader. Or he was, until his best friend, Dana, disappeared. Right in front of his face. Through the floor of the school.  Owen's average life has turned upside down.
He's determined to find Dana -- before anyone realizes she's missing. Owen sets out on a mysterious, mythological rescue mission with his friends Jon and Sydney. But what none of them know is that Dana's disappearance is part of a much larger riddle.  And they're at the center of it.

Judy Moody Girl Detective - Megan McDonald
Judy Moody is in a mood. A sleuthing, Nancy Drew kind of mood. So what’s a WBMS (world’s best mystery solver) to do? Go find a mystery, that’s what! And she doesn’t have to snoop for long: when Mr. Chips, a beloved crime-dog-in-training, goes missing, Judy Drewdy and her chums, agents Dills Pickle (Frank), Spuds Houdini (Rocky), and James Madagascar (Stink) find themselves smack-dab in the middle of a real life, scare-your-pants-off whodunit. Was Mr. Chips stolen by dirty dog nappers? And why are chocolate-chip cookies disappearing all over town? Watch out for red herrings—along with clever references to classic Nancy Drew mysteries—as Eagle Eye Moody and company are hot on the case.

Powerless - Matthew Cody

Twelve-year-old Daniel, the new kid in town, soon learns the truth about his nice—but odd—new friends: one can fly, another can turn invisible, yet another controls electricity. Incredible. The superkids use their powers to secretly do good in the town, but they’re haunted by the fact that the moment they turn thirteen, their abilities will disappear—along with any memory that they ever had them. Is a memory-stealing supervillain sapping their powers?
The answers lie in a long-ago meteor strike, a World War II–era comic book (Fantastic Futures, starring the first superhero, Johnny Noble), the green-flamed Witch Fire, a hidden Shroud cave, and—possibly, unbelievably—“powerless” regular-kid Daniel himself.  Superhero kids meet comic book mystery in this action-filled debut about the true meaning of a hero.

For my older readers I offer you the following:
The Map of Time - Felix J. Palma  This is an ARC
The Map of Time by Felix J. Palma. Set in Victorian London with characters real and imagined, The Map of Time is a page-turner that boasts a triple play of intertwined plots in which a skeptical H.G. Student Saturday - Skeleton Creek - Patrick Carman

Publisher:  Scholastic
Pages:  144
Genre:  Middle Grade, Mystery
Student Reviewer:  William

The book I chose to review is Skeleton Creek, book 1, by Patrick Carman.  Scholastic press, New York, Copyright 2009, publishes the book.  I believe Patrick Carman has written his best series ever by writing the Skeleton Creek Series.  He is one of my favorite authors and I hope some of you are fans of him too.

In this book, the author uses two main characters named Ryan and Sarah.  During the entire book, Sarah videotapes everything while Ryan records all of the events in the form of notes.  These notes are what you read in the book.  In the book at around every 25 pages, you get to a page with a password and a web address.  On these web pages, you can watch the videos filmed by Sarah and described in Ryan’s notes.  This is a clever way to write a book and makes it realistic and interesting.  The videos are at sarahfincer.com, then type in the password and watch Sarah’s videos.

This book is a great book but may be scary for some kids aged 11 or 12.  It’s a mysterious and frightening ghost story with a twist.  The setting occurs at a dredge near Seattle, in a town called Skeleton Creek.  The dredge is some sort of old fashioned haunted mining boat where it would dig wet mud out of a lake while looking for gold and what ever wasn’t gold would be thrown back into the water.  The dredge is abandoned at the time of the writing of the story.  There is an underlying theme throughout the book about not listening ton one’s parents, as the fifteen and sixteen year olds were instructed not only to not associate with one another, but also to never go to the dredge.  Not following their parent’s instructions turns out to have some disastrous consequences.

Some of my favorite things I liked about this book were:  it was the story about kids, it took place in an interesting setting, the characters were described very well by the author, the characters had personalities that I can understand and identify with, and the story was mysterious and changing and I never new what to expect next.  The only thing I did not like about this book was that it ended in a cliffhanger.  This is for obvious reasons as it is part of a book series.  I would recommend this book to anyone and middle school because it is an exciting tale of adventure and very fun to read.

Genre:Christian, Drama, Suspense,Adult

Publication Date: January 18, 2011
Purchase: Amazon

My guest today is Karen Arnpriester.  I had the privilege of reviewing her book a while back.  You can check out that review of her wonderful book hereBut if you are dying to know what her book is about, here is a quick synopsis.

Synopsis:
Anessia’s Quest follows the life of a woman born into dysfunction and neglect. The story takes you on her journey. A journey that begins with abandonment, abuse, and physical injury. Pagne (Pain) believes she is all alone, thrown away, but soon discovers that she is protected and guided by her guardian angel. A powerful relationship develops between this lost child and her loving protector that manifests as a unique method of communication.

Pagne encounters other broken people that become her family, friends and community. Her grace and compassion alter their destructive paths. She moves through her life unaware of the impact she creates, her purpose on Earth.

Her life is filled with tears, laughter, joy and heartbreak. She faces challenges that include ultimate betrayal, loss and shame. Challenges that are only bearable due to her trust and faith in heaven’s love and value for her. Love that is reinforced by her angel. She discovers the events that led to her mother’s indifference and neglect, and must decide how much grace she
can extend to a woman she has hated for most of her life. The ultimate test of forgiveness.

When she faces her death, Pagne discovers the true value and power of forgiveness and love. She is shown how her life created ripples that spread into waves of glorious influence. She was not an accident, she was placed on Earth with divine intent.

Author Bio:
Karen Slimick Arnpriester is a creative, passionate and adventuresome woman. She raised her two children, adores her seven grandchildren and is now a foster mom of two young ladies. She has been a self-taught graphic designer for twenty five years and started her own business twenty years ago. Her faith in God is strong and she believes that we are Christ’s hands, feet, arms and wallet. This translates into her involvement in youth ministries, local women’s shelter, street ministry, the elderly, as well as many other outreaches over the years. Her home has been available to single moms and their children, allowing them to get a fresh start.

ANESSIA’S QUEST is her first novel. The desire to write began two years ago as a hobby. She had an idea for a beginning and the end. The rest of the story flowed and took Karen on a journey. She cried and laughed as she followed the twists and turns of the characters. Once friends read the book, she was strongly encouraged to share her story with others.

RAIDER’S VENDETTA is Karen’s second novel. It will be released in October 2011. It is a psychological thriller between the main characters,Charley and Raider. Charley’s faith and ability to survive is challenged by
the rage of a shattered man.

Her third book, which addresses bullying, is in the works and should be released in 2012. The tentative title is HEY! LEADBOTTOM!

This author wants to take her reader to a place where they can evaluate their beliefs and who God is in their life. When asked why she limits herself to Christian fiction, she simply explains that it is where her heart is. If she commits her precious time to writing, it needs to be of value and have God’s ultimate purpose in mind. Bringing his children home to him. Karen welcomes God’s influence in her writing and prays that she is fulfilling His destiny for her life.

Interview
1. Tell us why you wrote a novel at this point in your life.

Writing was never a lifelong desire. Two years ago I participated in a devotional our women’s group did as a fund-raiser. It triggered a love of writing that I believe God planted. The book started out as my entertainment until friends insisted on reading it. The encouragement allowed me to consider taking my book seriously.

2. How did you create your characters?

The first two characters were sketchy at best, and they developed as the story unfolded. The remaining characters entered as needed. I did not start with any of them specifically defined. It was similar to friendships that grow and develop with time. You think you know them, and then they surprise you.

3. What was the process you used to develop the story line.

I had a beginning and end in mind. A “What If” question that I always entertained. The rest of the story was a journey that I traveled along with the characters. I did not know what was going to happen next until I got there.

4. Were you comfortable sharing circumstances from your own life?

There is some of my life included in the book. It was difficult at times, I would be crying while I typed. These experiences brought a realness to the story and it was worth the emotional upheaval. These are some of the events that readers connect with the most.
Once complete, I also saw threads that ran through the story that I could relate to. My circumstances were not nearly as dramatic, but we all have similar emotional struggles.

5. Now as a foster parent, do you believe the story represents the experience as a foster parent accurately?

Yes and no. The emotions, the devastation, the blessings and the need for God’s healing touch for these children was well expressed. The need for patience, the frustration, learning to adapt to new personalities and changes in your home is something I am still learning to deal with.

6. Share your experiences as a foster parent.

We were just going to try it out, see if we could be “Those Kind of People”. Sharing our home with abandoned kids until we were too old or too tired. Love happened, and we have increased our family by two. They love us back and it is powerful. My husband and I laugh when friends call us crazy. They cannot fathom the joy our decision has brought.

7. Your main characters are very service-oriented. Does this reflect your own life?

Yes, I have participated in many service ministries, which include the elderly, youth, and homeless shelters. My husband is a loving man who agreed to open our home to single mothers who needed a chance to get back on their feet. I believe we represent Christ while on Earth, to display his love and compassion.

8. Do you believe you are fulfilling your quest in life?

Yes, now. I squandered many years ignoring what God’s desires were. I focused on my needs and wants. I have a very different relationship with the Lord now, and my priorities have changed drastically.

9. Have angels played a role in your own life?

Absolutely, there have been several occasions that I felt their presence or heard their warning. It is very comforting to know that we are looked after.

10. What type of reactions have you gotten from the readers?

It has been incredible. Many people, women and men, have shared how much they connected with the characters. One mother was close to tears when she explained the transformation her teen daughter was making as she read the book. Several readers were amazed at how real the characters felt. One woman found herself thinking about them after finishing the book, wondering how they were, and then would remember that they weren’t real people. Another said she found herself praying for the main character while reading the book.

11. Any advice for novice writers?

Just do it. Don’t worry about what you’re going to do with it once done, just wallow in the experience of it. When my book was done, I asked key people to read it, people who loved me enough to be honest. It you are going to try and publish your book, you have to know that it is good.

12. What do you want readers to take away from your book?

I want them to know that there is a meaningful purpose for every life and it can be joyful. That it doesn’t have to be what their parents showed them. Also, love is mighty and can bring healing into broken hearts and lives.

13. Tell us about your next book.

My next book is titled Raider’s Vendetta. The book is about an older Christian woman who becomes a hostage in a bank robbery gone very bad. The criminal, Raider, blames God for his life and all it’s tragedies. The story throws these two opposing people together in a situation that forces them to deal with each other. When Raider realizes that Charley is a Christian, she becomes the target for all of his built up rage. She must rely on her faith and God’s grace to get her through his attacks, physical and psychological. This bitter man has a story, like so many broken people, and God helps her to see him through His eyes. Raider’s anger and aggression put Charley at great risk, as well as, her own pride and will. God uses the nightmare to profoundly touch both of their lives. The twists and turns keep you guessing and pulling for both of them.

14. Which authors do you enjoy reading and possibly influenced your writing?

One of the most impacting authors is William Paul Young who wrote The Shack. I know it is controversial, but it showed me that you can write about our flaws, the moments we lose faith and how God is always waiting for us to find him again.

15. Please explain the significance of the dandelion used for your author bio?

I feel that I started writing late in life compared to many authors. The dandelion appears to be dried up and spent, but the seeds are scattered and germinate new, strong plants. I know that I can still instigate creative thinking and challenges for the reader to consider.  I am withering but not done – never too old to instigate.
