Stepping on the Cracks by Mary Downing Hahn

Publisher:  Sandpiper, 2009
Pages:  216
Source:  My shelves
Genre:  Middle Grade Historical Fiction/Mystery

Remember the old rhyme, "Step on a crack and break your mothers back"?  Elizabeth and Maggie are best friends and neighbors.  They get bored and as they skip down the sidewalk they  chant, "step on a crack and break Hitler's back".  They both have brothers serving in the war against Hitler.  They have an enemy in town and his name is Gordy.  He has two brothers who are supposed to be fighting in the war.  He is constantly bullying Elizabeth and Maggie.  After one event they decide to follow him into the woods near his house and find a way to get revenge.  What they find is that Gordy is hiding his brother Stuart.  They also learn more about Gordy.  They soon learn that all enemies are not over seas as Gordy and his family fight an abusive father.  The girls are determined to help him while dealing with issues of their own.  This is a wonderful book.  I believe it is one that all kids should read.
