Legwork and a Kindle Giveaway by Roland Smith

Publisher:  Roland Smith INC (June 9, 2011)
Source:  Downloaded ebook from Amazon
Genre:  Middle Grade/Young Adult Adventure, Thriller

I follow several book review blogs.  By far one of my favorites belongs to Jennifer Donovan at "5 Minutes for Books".  On her post today she discussed an ebook and kindle giveaway contest by Roland Smith.  The topic of his book "Legwork" is very interesting.  In 1996 he had written a book that no one seemed to want to publish.  Those of us who write know and understand the feelings associated with that.  In this day and age with self publishing and ebooks the door has been opened to many of us.  Roland pulled that book out, re-read it and realized it was still as good as the day he wrote it. He then decided to make it available by ebook.  There are actually two stories here so let me tell them individually.  First is the ebook story.  In this day and age most of us have some form of e-reader.  It could be a Kindle, Nook, or any of the many other e-readers out there.  There are apps for your computer, iPad, or phone.  I love books.  You know, the physical ones.  I have 1200+ between my classroom shelves and my shelves in my house.  I order books monthly to feed this habit.  However, the year after my husband and I took a vacation to the Florida Keys and he carried in a suitcase that was packed with just my books, was the year he decided I needed an e-reader.  I fought it for a long time.  Then he bought me one and told me how many books I could carry on it.  I was sold. In the same way Roland Smith, another lover of the physical book, justifies having an ereader.  I is easier to carry on a plane, into a meeting, etc.  For this reason he has opened a contest where he is giving away a Kindle.  This leads to the second half of my story.
One of the conditions for entering the contest is reading his story "Legwork".
Blurb from Amazon:
When Briggs Barclay first meets his new neighbor Theodore Ranly, he can't imagine what they might have in common. Briggs’ main ambition in life is to dazzle the freshman football coach as soon as he enters high school. Theodore's got a killer arm when it comes to passing a ball, but the fact that he's confined to a wheelchair rules out any possibility of playing backyard tackle. They soon enter into a relationship that sends Briggs on the adventure of his life.

This is the story of two young boys Briggs and Theodore.  They are neighbors yet don't meet until a football game in Brigg's backyard sends the football into Theodore's back yard.  Theodore invites Briggs over.  Briggs is uncomfortable around Theodore because he is in a wheelchair.  He finally begins hanging out and Theodore tells him he is a dectective and invites Briggs to join him.  Briggs meets up with Uncle Willy who he thinks is just helping with Theodore's detective "game".  When he is given money and sent on an actual mission it becomes all too real.  He is to infiltrate a cult to see if a young missing girl is there.  I won't tell you more because you really need to read the book.  It kept me sitting on the edge of my seat and I read it in a little over an hour.  So check out this book and enter his contest.
