Student Saturdays: Eragon - Christopher Paolini

Student Reviewer:  Jake K.

From Goodreads:
When young Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; perhaps it will buy his adopted family meat for the winter. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself. Overnight his simple life is shattered, and he is thrust into a perilous new world of inescapable destiny, magical forces, and powerful people. With only an ancient sword and the instruction of an old, mysterious, hermit storyteller for guidance, Eragon and the fledgling dragon must navigate the dangerous terrain and dark enemies of an Empire ruled by a Emperor whose evil and power knows no bounds. Can Eragon take up the mantle of the legendary Dragon Riders? The fate of the Empire may rest in his hands….

 Student's Thoughts:
This book is amazing!  I’d seen the movie but the book is much better.  This book is set in a magical land called Alagaesia, but it also has scenes in places like Carvahall, Teirm, The Spine, Yazuac, The Hadarac Desert, and the Varden Mountain base in Farthen Dur.  The characterin this book are Eragon, his cousin Roran, Eragon’s dragon Saphira, Brom and many others.

This book is about a young man named Eragon who found a dragon egg while hunting in the Spine, a very treacherous mountain chain.  He doesn’t know what it is so he goes to town to sell it.  After nobody buys it he decided to keep it.  After a while the egg hatches. He learns that what comes out from the egg is a dragon, after hearing it from storyteller Brom soon the dragon grows, until it becomes a full fledged dragon.  Brom also speaks of a long time ago.  The dragon rider protected the people, until killed off by the Forswarn a group of rogue dragon rider led by Galbortix the King of Alagaesia.  If you want to hear more read the book.  I recommend this book to fans of fantasy adventure books.  If you like it read the rest of the book.

The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

Student Reviewer:  Emily

From Goodreads:
Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister’s place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Student's Thoughts:
I really like this book.  Suzanne Collins is the author of the Hunger Games.  Katiess Everdeen’s sister was picked to go up for the Hunger Games.  For those of you who don’t know the Hunger Games is where two people from each district will get picked to go into the Hunger Games.  Twenty=four go into an arena and fight to the death.  So Katniss volunteers for her sister.  She and twenty-three others go into an arena and only one is supposed to come out.  I think this book was very good.  This year they held the games in a forest  and they fought for two weeks.  I think people will love this book.  I know I do.
