Student Saturday: The Maze of Bones - Rick riordan

Student Reviewer:  Austin
Publisher:  Scholastic Press
Genre:  Middle Grade Mystery
Pages:  220

The Maze of Bones by Rick Riordan is an action packed mystery which made me want to read all the other books in the series.  The main characters are orphans, Dan and Amy Cahill.  It starts out when Grace Cahill dies.  She is Dan and Amy's very wealthy and powerful grandmother.  At the reading of her last will and testament, all of the Cahill family members are given a chance to go on a treasure hunt or walk away with a million dollars.  Dan, Amy, and all the other family members choose to form teams to hunt for the clues.  Each family was their own team.  In the end, the winning team that solve all the clues and finds the family treasure will be the most powerful people n Earth.  After they get their first of the 39 clues, they figure out that the adventure ahead is full of danger. The other five relative teams that go on the hunt constantly try to sabotage Dan and Amy.

The first clue takes Dan and Amy on a trip to Paris, France where they search for their second clue.  During  their searches for the clues, evil relatives try to harm them by using poison, a concussion causing bomb, covering them in cement, swinging shovels at them, and fire.  The relatives are not the only problem that Dan and Amy have in solving the clues.  They cannot get along with each other and fight all the time.

There are many important people in history that are family members of the Cahill's and they are part of the clues throughout the series.  Benjamin Franklin, for instance, actually left the second clue in the catacombs of Paris.  Each clue only contains six words.  The searchers had to go to libraries and other historic places in Paris to solve the clues.

I would recommend this book to my classmates because I couldn't put it down.  if you love cue hunting, action, an mystery, The Maze of Bones will be a must read.  So next time you are at the book store or public library look for this book.  I would give this book five stars because it is not only an excellent mystery book, but it will make the reader always keep wondering what is going to happen next.  Even though I don't have any connections to this book, I still loved the book.

  1. Yes, I agree, this is an interesting and action-packed adventure series for middle grade readers. Nice review. Also, worthy of note, the books in the series are authored by different people.
