Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes

Genre: Middle Grade, Historical Fiction, Realistic Fiction
Source:  I purchased a copy for my classroom

Ghost Boys tells the story of a young black boy who is shot by a white police officer.  The story is told in alternating chapters, "Alive" and "Dead". Jeremy is bullied at school.   When he tries to protect a new student named Carlos, he takes a beating. Carlos scares the bullies away by pulling out a toy gun. They don't know it is a toy.   As they leave school, Carlos gives it to Jeremy to play with. He is pretending he is a good guy, shooting the bad guys. The police pull up and shoot him in the back. They never identified themselves, and worse than that, they didn't call for medical help. As a ghost, Jeremy meets the police officer's daughter. She can see him. She is conflicted about what her father did. Jeremy is joined by another Ghost boy, Emmett Till.  Together they work to help her.  We hear so many stories even today that show things like this still happen.  This was one of the best books I have read this school year. I had bought it for one of my students to read.  Highly recommended.
