Danger Mountain by Max Elliot Anderson

Genre: Adventure
Source: I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

After the adventure at camp, Kurt’s father decides to take him with him on business to Colorado. The idea is that Kurt will stay with his cousin. That way he surely can’t get into any trouble. His father guesses wrong. When Kurt his cousin and two others witness  something they shouldn’t while on a hike in the mountains, things turn deadly. They have men chasing them, there are wild animals and the only way to escape is to climb higher.  The twist on this one was absolutely wonderful.  There is so much packed into these small books. I learned so much about hiking in the mountains just from reading the book.  Because it is non-stop action I have several reluctant readers I believe this will  interest.

Summer Camp Trouble by Max Elliot Anderson

Genre: Adventure, Middle Grade, Mystery
Source: I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Kurt and his friends can’t wait to go to summer camp. It is a Christian based camp. When a spoiled rich kid flies into camp in his father’ s helicopter, Kurt and his friends pray the kid doesn’t end up in their tribe. They see right away that Rudy is going to be trouble. He has suitcases full of candy to buy anything he wants. No matter what happens, or what havoc Rudy causes, Kurt is determined to be nice to him. When a fire starts, the question that the counselors asked one night becomes very real. “Would you be willing to lay down your life for another?”   The action never stops in these books.  I felt sorry for Kurt’s parents. It seems like no matter what he does, trouble just seems to find him.

The Secret of Grandmother’s Grandfather Clock by Max Elliot Anderson

The Accidental Adventures of Kurt Benson and His Friends, Riley and Jordan Series

Genre: Adventure, Mystery
Source:  I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

This author knows how to write stories that kids, especially boys, will love. They are just as popular with my girls.   I was familiar with his Sam Cooper series, but not this one.  The author graciously sent me books three through 6. Kurt Benson is the main character.  When his family receives a call one day telling them that Kurts grandfather has died.  Kurt soon learns that something may have caused his death. His grandfather had been a pilot and Kurt belongs to a flying club. The way he uses clues to help solve the mystery of what is going on in his grandfather’s town and what truly happened to his grandfather will keep you reading.

First Review of the New Year: The Phantom Vale by Alfred M. Struthers

Genre: Middle Grade, Mystery
Source: I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Nathan Cole and Gina McDermott are quickly becoming two of my favorite book characters. Nathan's family inherited a bookcase full of old book from his grandfather. Each book is an old unsolved mystery. In the first book, "The Case of Secrets" we are introduced to Nathan and Gina and this special bookcase. After Nathan and Gina solve a 150 year old mystery in the first book, they and their families are hounded by the media. Their parents decide they need to get away from them all. They head up to a cabin owned by Nathan's uncle.  Before he can get everything packed a book from his dresser falls to the floor. Nathan tries a variety of things to get the book to stay. It isn't until they are in the car that he sees the book in the window and rushes back in to grab it. For some reason the book is letting him know he needs to take it with them.

His first night in the cabin he reads part of the book and discovers that the town they are staying in has its own mystery. In the late 1800s a railroad car went missing.  Nathan and Gina set out to figure out what has happened to the car. Along the way they are given clues by an old man named Wynn. What is his connection. Why does the city officer constantly follow them and Wynn around?  How can they solve this mystery when everyone in the world is looking for them and thinks if they find them they will become famous?  The clues are give through the research the kids conduct. Gina is a fan of puzzles and this mystery is a great puzzle. I wasn't as quick to make the connections as some may be.  Once I started the book I could not let it go.  This is a series you must read. I just hope the author can pop them out fast enough.

Plans for 2018

This next year promises to be great. I have spent the last week reflecting on how my year went.Last year's school year was very stressful. We had a large turnover, especially in the office/administration side. That was the negative part. On the positive side, in April I learned I had been one of five teachers in our state selected to spend three weeks at the Hermitage Artist Retreat in Manasota Key, Florida. I spent three glorious weeks in a cottage on the beach working on revision of my latest book and starting a new one.  That was the happiest I had been all year.  This school year has been great. However, I signed up for two book challenges besides the one I participate in on Goodreads. I accomplished nothing on either one. I did reach my 150 book goal on Goodreads. It is only because I got behind on reviews of picture books that I was able to reach it. I had started putting weight back on after losing so much for my double knee surgery.  So when I reflect back on last year to make plans for this year I have made some decisions that are all about me.

My Health
My goal for this year is to stick closer to my paleo diet. I had lost so much weight and still have a long way to go. I felt so much better. Before the next school year starts I want to drop 50-70 pounds.  This means not only sticking to my paleo lifestyle, but putting more exercise into my life.

My Reading Life
I was stressed by struggling to read and write this year.  You know you have slacked off when publishers and authors contact you to see if everything is okay.  I am dropping my Goodreads goal from 150 to just 50 books.  I am not officially signing up for any reading challenges. I want reading to be fun again and not feel like a chore.

My Writing Life
I want to spend more time working seriously on my own writing. One thing that has been a hindrance is that I currently have no personal computer of my own. I have been taking my school laptop back and forth from school. This means all of the programs I own for reading and writing have been unavailable to me because so many things are blocked by my district. I can't download anything. In February that will be remedied. We were an "A" school this year and so with part of my bonus money I will be purchasing another laptop.  My goal is to write a minimum of three times a week for a minimum of an hour. I say a minimum because with school teaching and testing things can quickly get out of control.

My Creative Life
I plan to start painting and quilting again. There are a couple of projects that I began a year or more back and just never got back to them. When I stopped doing some of the creative things I loved I became a stressed out cranky person.

My Family Life
A few months back my husband and I started going to "Pop Craft", a gourmet popsicle place, on Saturdays. This was our weekly "date". We need to spend more time together, just us. My mother lives with us so we go very few places.  We have to start making time for US.

My Work Life
This is the one I know I struggle with the most. As a teacher I am always putting my job first. This has led to problems in many areas of my life. I get to work an hour to an hour and a half early. I leave 1 - 2 hours later than others.  I bring work home.  I have gotten better. However, this next year, unless there is a critical deadline for the next day, I must stop bringing work home. That will leave me several hours for the things I listed above.

My Plan
One way I am going to do this is to journal each week. I want to take a look at these areas and see how I did and what I need to improve. That is what I do with my job. If it is important enough for me to do this for my job, then it is even more important and valuable for me to do it in other areas of my life. I need to keep a calendar of my activities like I do for school, or reviews I agree to do. I believe with these things in place at the beginning of 2018 that my life will be better.

If you have any suggestions or would like to share what your plans are for the new year please leave me a comment.

The Marker by Diana Savastano

Genre: Adult, Mystery, Suspense
Source: I purchased a copy

The book starts off in the middle of action. A battle is going on and Dr. Bradley Taylor, a doctor during the war is treating the injured. Although he is a Confederate, he upholds his oath and treats men on both sides.  He gets shot in the back and his friend drags him into the woods where he dies. Several valuables are taken from him. As he lays dying he has a vision of a woman with a grave marker in her hands.  We then switch to present day. Jennifer Beasley works for a magazine in New York. She is being sent to Florida to interview several people for a story. She insists on doing the story only if she gets two weeks of vacation afterwards. While in Florida, she stops at an antique shop to purchase a gift for her father’s birthday. She finds a unique marker from the civil war period.  She is told the seller’s son found it at a Civil War graveyard in Louisiana. She starts hearing voices and seeing things. Once she is back in New York, her cousin who was raised by her dad brings a friend who makes several predictions about the marker. Jennifer has another vision where she meets the ghost of Dr. Bradley Taylor.  This spurs her on to Louisiana to the gravesite where she meets Dr. Bradley’s ghost again. She interviews him and gets information she needs to help him. She learns he is in a Union graveyard when he is a Confederate soldier. She calls on all of her friends, makes some new ones, and even finds true love and danger as she tries to keep her promise to help Dr. Bradley.  This was full of so much mystery. She uncovers, lies, betrayal, murder as the book progresses. I read the book in less than three hours, it was that good.  Highly recommended to anyone who loves thrillers, suspense, and mysteries.

Off the Grid: My Ride from Louisiana to the Panama Canal in an Electric Car by Randy Denmon

Genre: Adult, Nonfiction
Source: I received a copy to facilitate my review.

Talk about courage, these men, Randy Denmon and Dean Lewis, have it. I would never attempt to do what they did. He and a friend took an electric car, a Tesla S and drove it from Louisiana to the Panama Canal. What terrified me were the very things they had to worry about. A lot of these countries have drug lords. They also had to worry about to deal with policemen who did things their own way. For me the scariest thing was not knowing where they were going to be able to get electric to power their car. They took all kinds of plugs and extension cords. The Tesla sits real low to the ground. This was also a problem for them. They were not always driving on real smooth roads.  There were treacherous mountain roads. There were roads full of potholes, bumps, and other problems like volcanoes.  The book, for all of the issues they faced is very upbeat due to Randy’s attitude/sense of humor.  As much as I loved the book and knew things had to turn out okay, since they made it back to write the book, I worried for them and their safety the entire time.  This was definitely different from what I usually read. That is probably why I enjoyed it so much. I could live through their trip without having to do the physical traveling, from the safety of my own home.

Guest Post: Ken Mixon - Texas Banker/Oklahoma Hunter

New Dodge Pickup

Years ago, we had a customer named Rita. Rita was eighty two and was worth about two million dollars.

We were pretty surprised at the bank when we found out she had picked Bill for a boyfriend. Bill was fifty one, but as my father would say, it was a hard fifty one. He did not have two dimes to rub together for a net worth. If you had seen him hitching a ride on a train, you would have not been surprised. He seemed a strange match for Rita.

After Rita and Bill had been dating about nine months, we discovered that they had married. At first, we were concerned that Bill had married Rita just for her money. But we found out that Rita had made Bill sign a pre-nuptial agreement. She may have been older but she was a smart lady.

Rita added Bill to only one of her checking accounts. The account had a balance of only $10,000 and she did not add him to her other accounts at our bank which totaled over one million dollars.

About a year later, we got word at the bank that Rita had passed away. One of the more solemn things we deal with at the bank is the passing of our customers. We liked Rita and were sad to hear of her death.

Two days after Rita’s passing, there was a check presented for payment on one of her accounts for $67,453. When a customer dies, we always watch their accounts for unexpected activity. This $67,453 check was unusual. It was made out to the local Dodge dealership for the purchase of a Ram pickup. It was also dated the exact day Rita passed away (and was on one of her accounts that Bill did not sign on).

I have been reviewing check signatures for many years. While some people may not realize it, a bank has a legal obligation to be sure that a signature on a check is genuine.

As I examined the signature on the $67,453 check, it appeared to be Rita’s signature. However, after reviewing it in length, I decided that it was a forgery. It was a very good forgery but it was not her signature. We returned the check to the Dodge dealership unpaid.

As I expected, we received a telephone call from the dealership very quickly.  Mr. Wright, the general manager of the dealership, asked if he could meet with me as soon as possible. I agreed to meet and he was at the bank in thirty minutes.

After we greeted each other, Mr. Wright got right to business. He told me how Bill and Rita had come into the dealership and how Rita had agreed to purchase the pickup for Bill. Mr. Wright added that since Rita signed the check, the bank needed to honor the check and give him the money. I asked Mr. Wright if he was there when Bill and Rita purchased the pickup and he responded that he was not but his sales manager was there and had told him the story.

I explained that the bank had a legal obligation to determine whether Rita had signed the check and that we had determined that she had not. Mr. Wright said that was impossible since his sales manager had seen her sign the check in person.

The discussion went on like this for twenty minutes. Mr. Wright said the signature was hers and I told him that we believed it was not. He said she had signed the check in front of the sales manager and I told him I did not believe she signed the check. He was adamant that Rita had signed the check. I listened but did not change my position. In the end, he left the bank without the dealership’s money for the check.

Two days later, Mr. Wright called me and asked me if he could bring Bill in with him to talk with me. I agreed to see them. They arrived within fifteen minutes (in a brand new, bright yellow, lifted, Dodge extended cab pickup).

Mr. Wright asked Bill to tell me the story of purchasing the truck. Bill told me the story but there was a significant change from the story I had heard two days prior. In the new version, Bill made the deal for the truck, went home and had Rita sign the check and he brought it back to the dealership.

Over the years, I have found that if you put a very straight question to someone, you may just get the truth out of them. After Bill finished the story, I waited fifteen seconds, looked Bill straight in the eye and asked him, “Did you sign her name on this check?” He looked back at me and said “Yes, I signed her signature. I have done it before in the past and the bank has never questioned me about it. “

I will always remember the look on Mr. Wright’s face at that point. He looked like someone had hit him with a right cross. Bill had admitted that the signature was an absolute forgery. This meant the dealership was not getting any money from my bank on this check ever. He and Bill left deflated.

Something tells me that dealership will be more careful in the future when they accept a check and the signer is not in front of them. The sad thing is that it appears Bill went straight to the dealership to buy this truck the moment Rita passed away. He probably had been planning this purchase for months. What a scum ball.

Chuga the Beluga by Carl F. Kristeller

Genre: Upper Elementary, Middle Grade, Adventure
Source:  I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

First let me say that we need more books like this one.  Chuga is a Beluga Whale. This is his first migration to Black Pebbled Beach. He must make some very important decisions that will affect him for life. Along the way he has the guidance of his mother and others. This is a simple yet important book because every child will be able to see themselves or others in this book. It deals with issues of new friends, bullying, building relationships based on kindness, how to show patience and most important, how to forgive. This will ring true with the youngest to the oldest showing the consequences of decisions they make.  This book is not preachy, which is what makes it so wonderful. Along this journey there is much to be learned about life in the ocean.
