I Am A Star – Inge Auerbacher

I Am A Star – Inge Auerbacher
Publisher: Puffin
Pages:  96
Source:  Purchased
Genre:  Middle Grade, Autobiography

This is a memoir that will haunt you long after you've finished the book.  Inge Auerbacher was sent to Terezin concentration camp when she was only seven years old.  This isn't just a sad re-telling of her story of survival.  She has filled this short book with pictures to help the youngest reader visualize that time period and the conditions she lived in.  She has sprinkled poetry throughout.  This is not just a sad story but a story of hope.  Most importantly this story is the voice of every child who died at Terezin.

  1. I'm sure this is very moving and emotional and so important. Thanks for telling me about this. I think it is something I will need to read with my son someday.

  2. It is a quick enough read. I love reading books like this. I love having my students read books like this because we are a society that tends to forget things like this after so many years have passed.

  3. I am Inge Auerbacher, the author of " I Am A Star." Bless you all for your wonderful comments. I am happy to report that this book is now in 8 languages, and has become a classic here in the USA and in Germany. I have just come out with book #6 written together with my Polish-Catholic friend and my experiences, a German-Jew during the Holocaust; "Children of Terror." It has also come out in Polish.

  6. Dear Inge and Bozenna,
Meeting you both last evening at Rider
University was an honor, and a memory I will cherish always. I learned about your book
and documentary from John Czop, of the Post Eagle newspaper.
I will be discussing your book and film
at my Jewish study group this morning, and plan
to write an article for my local paper.

    With warmest wishes,
    Bette Brottman
