Heavenly Vision by Koos Verkaik

Genre: Adult, Fantasy
Source: I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Nothing is what it seems, in this new, exciting Koos Verkaik novel…
It starts with the finding of an old manuscript hidden in an old atlas of the Cape of Good Hope, around the year 1745.

“Allart Vroom climbed down from the ship, and we stood ready to catch him,” wrote Captain Adriaen Kalf. “His clothes, his flesh, his bones pulverized in our hands. He formed a small heap of powder at our feet. Please, believe me—it is not, like someone suggested, the contents of broken hourglasses.”

Jan Glas, an Amsterdam publicist, reads about a machine that could cause the end of the entire world! Of course, he wants to find out the truth about the remarkable manuscript! A long journey takes him to England and the USA.

A peculiar man crosses his path - Wesley Dunn, Raso Preacher, Center of the Heavenly Vision, Franks Knight, Florida, USA. This man says that the world will be destroyed by ‘the Machine of Colton’, which is also mentioned in the manuscript that Jan found! Only a few people will survive – the true followers of the odd Mr. Wesley Dunn, and the Raso way of life!

Murder, mystery and intrigue will keep the reader guessing as to what is going on. Is the world coming to an end, and if so, who will survive?

My Thoughts:
If you like books that bounce back and forth between the past 1700s,  and the present then this is the book for you. It makes it a little confusing, but if you are willing to hang in there it all becomes clear in the end. In the past we have an old manuscript, in the present we have a machine that is said to be able to end the world. What are the connections if any between these two? The author has taken these two events and woven them into a story that will have you reading cover to cover just to find that connections. Once again this author has created a book that grabs you and forces you to read to find the answer to all of those questions you had at the beginning. I applaud him for this ability.

All Father by Koos Verkaik

Genre: Adult, Fantasy
Source: I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

From Goodreads:
Peter Jonker has special gifts at his disposal. As a provoked, frightened child, he has come under the spell of master painter Poolman and his evocative, terrifying canvases. Poolman has spun gory tales about Wodan, god of the Germanic tribes, and the fearless Scandinavian berserkers. And now it seems Peter has seen the magic truth behind those sagas. In his agony he discovers unknown talents, and soon it is said he has the possession of immortal powers! Haunted by the fantasies of his youth, the adult Peter is going downhill, and in his vulnerable state strangers intervene trying to reach their own dubious goals by taking advantage of him. Wodan is looking for him and wants him to join the Army of the Dead - Berserkers who carry death and destruction... Peter's life becomes a choking nightmare. Is he responsible for the death of four people, or being set up by unknown forces? Brought under hypnosis, the horrible truth may come out... Koos Verkaik, born in Bolnes, near Rotterdam, is a prolific Dutch author of fantasy, science fiction and horror - a master at creating sensational work full of magic, horror, mystery and adventure! At the age of 16, Koos published the comic Scotty Clay in weekly Sjors, four pages every week. At 18, he wrote his first science fiction thriller, ADOLAR, during one weekend. He now he has over sixty titles in publication. After meeting Bill Thompson, editor of both Stephen King and John Grisham, in the USA, Thompson became very enthusiastic about the work of Verkaik, working together with Koos on several manuscripts. Sarah Book Publishing is proud to be chosen to publish Verkaik's All Father!

My Thoughts:

Peter Jonker has a gift. There are those out there who would take advantage of him and his gift for their benefit. As a young boy he was told the stories of Woden, god of the Germanic tribes. Now this god is hunting him? What is the purpose? Is it good or evil. There are murders. Is Peter responsible? All of these are questions you will find answers to when you read this fast paced book. The adventures just keep rolling in until suddenly you find yourself at the end asking, “Did I really just read that?” One thing I’ve noticed is that with this author we get a look at the gods of other cultures that we here in America may not be familiar with. I think it is this thirst for knowledge that has made his books so appealing to me.

I’ll Always Be With You by Violetta Armour

Genre: Adult, Realistic Fiction
Source: I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

If you are looking for a great book, one that will tug at your heartstrings then look no further. This is a story that could have been ripped right out of the headlines. It is told through three points of view. First we have Teddy, the son and survivor of a horrible accident. He is dealing with survivor’s guilt because  he was at the wheel when a drunk driver hit them killing his father. Then we have his mother Mary who is trying to hold it all together for the sake of her three children, help her son “deal” with the accident while feeling she is being guided by her husband to make decisions that will affect them all. Finally there is  Rosetta, the girlfriend from the past, a past that frowned on blacks and whites dating.  All three of them deal with grief in their own way.
There are several things I found amusing. Whenever Teddy comes upon a situation he immediately sees a headline.  His first friend is a girl he has to share a locker with. Mindy is very unusual. She had one best friend who moved away. She remembers the weirdest, random facts and they seem to pop out  at the most inopportune times. But Mindy really was a character I loved.

The author did a great job of showing realistically how death can tear a family apart, while at the same time showing that it doesn’t mean we lose our memories of the one who died. She also showed the process  that grief takes and how it is different for each person. The steps to getting back on their feet and learning to live life again was so realistic.  I have only one warning for you. Do NOT go into this book without a box of tissues.  This is a great way to start off my new year of reading. Definitely a book I will recommend to everyone. There are life lessons for all. It is such a clean read that I believe it is a book I will put on my shelves at school, because it seems every year I find one student who experiences a death in their family and maybe what they learn by reading Teddy’s side of the story will help them.

A New Kind of Battle by Elizabeth A. Patterson

Genre: Mystery, Fantasy, Middle Grade
Source: I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

From Goodreads:
Come on, Henry said, stepping up onto the window ledge. Estelle is right. We can't let anything happen to Sersha. Henry s bravery encouraged her and she nodded her head as he jumped. She watched his wings become visible, spreading wide as he sailed through the air. Climbing onto the ledge Haley jumped after him. It has been a while since teenage twins Henry and Haley Miles moved to the Bonner homestead in Idaho, stumbled onto a map and key, and discovered a portal into another world filled with fairies, magic, and danger that eventually led them to uncover the mystery behind a long-held legend. Now fairy Princess Sersha is trapped on the wrong side of the portal and her brother, Prince Valian, is injured and unable to leave the city of Roan. After the twins are visited by Estelle, a witch, who tells them they must protect Princess Sersha at all costs, the four return to Roan through her postern. As soon as they arrive at Hilda s brick cottage, the twins learn that Prince Valian is healing, but that the land of Wisen has been overrun by strange occurrences. Its creatures are going berserk and fights are abundant. As they begin to investigate, Haley discovers she is competing with Prince Valian s callous nurse for his attention, even while she is being pursued by a dark, handsome sorcerer. Worse yet, now Queen Lilia has disappeared. As the famous foursome split up in search of the missing queen, they are forced to embark on a journey into unknown territory as love, jealously, rage, and humor leave their mark upon the fairies. "

My Thoughts:
Haley and Henry are twins who find themselves going back through a portal to Roan. They are going back to check on Prince Valian who was injured. Hayley had feelings for the prince and was sure he had feelings for her. However, his nurse seems to be getting in the way. Things are changing quickly for the fairies. If you are looking for a quick paced book to read that is full of adventure then this is definitely the book for you. It picks up where the previous one left off. Definitely a great book to start off your new year of reads

New Years Resolution "PERSEVERE"

This year promises to be a great year. I choose to believe this no matter what may happen. Following several other people who choose a word to help define or guide their life for a period of time. I have chosen the word persevere to be my word for 2016. Persevere means to persist in anything you attempt no matter how difficult, no matter what obstacles get in the way.  You just keep going.

There are many reasons I chose this word as my New Years Resolution

  • I will persevere in my quest to revise my current work in progress and get it published.
  • I will persevere in my quest to finish two other works that are half finished.
  • I will persevere in my quest to complete  the picture book I was creating with my grand-daughter.
  • I will persevere in my quest to lose weight because I will be having double knee surgery this summer.
  • I will persevere in my quest to be as prepared as possible to the new school year before it begins.
  • I will persevere in my quest to complete my reading challenge of 150 books this year.
  • I will persevere in my quest to read the Bible through this year.

Three by Jeff and Erynn Altabef

Second Chances by Jeff Altabef adn Erynn Altabef
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Short Story
Source: I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

From Goodreads:
One night changes everything.
One chance meeting forces a young man to make a choice.
Will he do what’s right?
Or what’s easy?

Ayden is forced to remember old secrets he’d rather not reveal when his daughter returns home with questions about his shadowy past and dangerous legacy. Will she understand when he tells her about the night mysterious strangers came to his sleepy Arizona town looking for a local medicine man?
As his tale unfolds, Ayden pieces together the mystery that connected a recent murder, the strangers, and the medicine man’s bizarre behavior. Will he allow old demons to rule him, or will he get a second chance?

My Thoughts:
This book is a short story that fills in the gaps after Wind Catcher. It is precise and not only answers questions you had left, but leaves you with more so that you must read the next book.   It is a must read, eventhough it is short.

Brink of Dawn by Jeff Altabef and Erynn Altabeff
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
Source: I received a copy to facilitate my review. The Opinions expressed here are my own.

From Goodreads:
They walk among us as if they are gods.
Only the Chosen know what they are.
Only the Chosen know to fear them.
And only the Chosen can defeat them.

Evolved Publishing presents the second book in the multiple award-winning Chosen series of young adult mystery thrillers, which feature an American Indian fantasy and supernatural theme, from the same author who brought you the award-winning thriller Shatter Point, and his daughter.

Juliet Wildfire Stone and her best friend, Troy Buckhorn, barely escaped their sleepy Arizona town alive. Now they’re speeding to New York City to find the three other Chosen. The Chosen must band together to face an ancient foe that threatens all humanity.

Yet Juliet doesn’t know whom to trust, and strange things are happening in the City.

The Chosen will be tested, their resolve questioned, and their flaws exposed. Each must decide whether he or she will fulfill their destiny—or run. To defeat the enemy, they must stop battling among themselves and overcome their own struggles.

Only one can lead them. Will Juliet embrace her powers in time?

My Thoughts:
This is the second book in the Chosen series. I reviewed Wind Catcher here. In this book we find Juliet and Troy trying to locate the other “chosen”. This is the only way they can battle the Deltaite and have a chance of winning. Juliet and her friends must each learn to control the special ability or ‘gift’ they have.  Juliet has a gift of “seeing visions” yet she doesn’t trust herself enough with her gift. This is what makes this book stand out among others with similar plot lines. You have characters, who have a gift, yet they are not robotic. They are very dimensional and fleshed out. They are flawed and we the reader are privy to their flaws. This makes them a character the reader can relate to.
There is enough here to make you wonder if they will be able to save the world; just enough to keep you coming back for more. Definitely an author you want to watch.

I am looking forward to the final book in the trilogy, Scorched Souls.  As far as I’m concerned it can’t come soon enough.

Enemies of the State by Jeff Altabef
Genre: Adult, Thriller, Short Story
Source: I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

From Goodreads:
Steven Cabbott is fighting some serious personal demons, and with America on the brink of civil war, knowing whom to trust is almost impossible. Especially when the person he trusts least of all is himself.
After joining a special operations unit at a young age, the government turned Steven into a killer, and worse—someone who enjoys killing. He tells himself that was a different version of him, and he has changed. Yet one simple question haunts him: does he really want to change?
As civil war threatens to rip America apart, he yearns only for redemption and a good night’s rest. Two young dissident leaders may hold the key to Steven’s absolution, and to peace, but the government is poised to abduct them.
Faced with near impossible odds, Steven must extract the dissidents, but he encounters treachery at every turn, and he’s running out of time. Can he keep his personal demons in check long enough to save the rebels, or will the government claim them all as Enemies of the State?

My Thoughts:
This short story is sure to get your blood pumping. Steven has lived a life full of killing. He grew up in the ghettos where he saw his mom deal with her own demons. He escaped the ghettos and signed up for the military where he became a special asset, a killer. He could kill without blinking an eye. Then one day he walked away from it all. He hired out to work for a man who lives in one world, but he believes truly wants to make a difference in the world Steven came from. When one of his bosses' employees ends up dead it is his job to interrogate the killer and do what he has to do to protect his boss.  The question is, can he keep his demons at bay or will they resurface and turn him back into the man he tried to leave behind?  This is going to be one great thriller. This short story is like a prequel to what is to come.  Love reading the work of this author.

Enslaved Series by Katie Clark

This review is for all three books in this series.  This is a must read.

Genre: Young Adult, Dystopian, Christian, Science Fiction
Source: I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Vanquished Book 1
Imagine a future where society is divided into three classes; Lessers, Middles, and the Greaters. Every dystopian society must have someone at the top who perverts life. In this case the Greaters have control of everything that affects the Middles and Lessers including medicine that could cure people. They have also outlawed religion. In this story we meet Hana who's mother has become deathly ill. She has cancer. Hana's society is so controlled she has a curfew, isn't allowed to date, and has grown to believe everything the Greaters have told her. But, when her mom gets sick and she is told there is no medicine for her mom she begins to open her eyes and look around at what is really happening. A medic named Fischer at the hospital tells her that there is a power higher than the Greaters who can help her mom. He shows her a forbidden Bible and encourages her to seek the truth. Her eyes are opened to so many things that are wrong in her world. She realizes that a lot of what is wrong has been created by the Greaters who supposedly have society's best interest in mind.
This is a great and unique dystopian because it isn't just about questioning the upper end of society, but their forced outlawing of religion.  Unfortunately, it is beginning to parallel our world way too much.  This is a book I would definitely recommend.

Deliverance Book 2

This book picks up right where the first one ended. In this sequel we get more of a Hunger Games feel. Hana is in the Greater City where the president takes and interest in her, just as President Snow did in The Hunger Games. However, this is not as similar to the previous mentioned series from this point forward. Hana really wants to help. Unfortunately what she does is often inadvertently  at the cost of others. She is now a 'Greater'. This puts her in a position to learn what is truly happening with the government. It also puts her in the crosshairs of the president. He knows she has become a threat. She has found a pocket of Christians that have not let the government take away their belief system. Now she must find a way to let people know what is really happening, and at the same time protect those she loves. The suspense just keeps getting higher and higher.  One suggestion for the reader is make sure you own all three books because you are going to want to read them one after another.

Redeemer Book 3
In this book there are so many changes for Hana. She's been stripped of being a Greater. This in itself opens the door for her to truly find and do what she must for the greater good of society.  This book is so suspenseful and full of twists and turns you can't put it down.  The author has done an excellent job of tying everything up. It has a very satisfying ending. This is also a series I would definitely reread. I believe every time I read it I will see something a little bit different, something I missed the first time. Will I recommend it?  You'd better believe it. I will also be looking for other books by this author in the future. She is one awesome writer.

Skulls by Mike Artell
Source: I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

This is one of the coolest books I’ve read.  This book is full of a variety of skulls. But, it isn’t enough just to show the reader all of the cool skulls. The author tells us a little bit about the animal it came from and usually a great little unknown fact to go along with it. For example, did you know a nine-banded armadillo can hold its breath for almost six minutes or jump three to four feet straight up in the air?
Looking at the skull of the elephant leaves you wondering how it’s head is so big. Looking at the skull of a hippopotamus explains why they are the most dangerous animal in the world. One of the scariest and flimsiest looking skulls is that of the rattlesnake.  There are teeth on the lower and upper jaw and two humongous fangs. Looking at the variety of skulls tells you a lot about how animals survive. The Tiger’s skull shows a massive area for being able to sniff out its prey, not to mention it two massive fangs on top and bottom.  Words underlined in the text have a glossary in the back.  This is followed by a page of links for more information about plants, animals and other cool facts.

Where Do They Go When It Rains? By Helen H. Wu

Oliver and Jumpy Stories 31-33 by Werner Stejskal

In “Crockery Party” we find a New Years Day tradition in Silandia.
In Silandia, on New Years Day the cutlery and crockery create a feast for Oliver, Jumpy and Joey. After they have cooked and served their guests they turn themselves upside down and become instruments. They play until Midnight when they go back to their shelves and drawers.
In “Shark Frenzy” Oliver, Jumpy and Joey take the boat out to watch the whales on their trip south. They love to watch the children play with the whales. But, one thing they must all watch out for is sharks. While Joey was swimming they suddenly saw a shark fin. The shark tried to eat Joey. His mother pulled him into the boat. This made the shark mad. He pushed the boat further away from shore. As he prepared to bite the boat, Oliver threw a bottle of chili sauce into the shark’s mouth. The shark swam away. Oliver and his friends had a party on the beach.
In “Small World” Oliver goes through a magic door in a castle. This door has the power to make you smaller. Oliver visits the insects that live in the grass. He outsmarts a beetle, gets a ride on a caterpillar. Then he travels the tunnels of an anthill and meets the queen. Suddenly he finds himself trapped in a raindrop. When he gets out he decides his adventure is over. What a wonderful way to teach about the smaller creatures in nature.

This is another wonderful Oliver Adventure.

Monty The Courageous Survival of a Rescue Dog by Janet Squires

The story of Monty is both a heartbreaking and a heartwarming story. Monty was found in the desert close to death. He was used as a bait dog for dog fighting. The atrocities thrust upon him just tear at your heart. He'd been shot through the hip, had a broken back leg, the other back leg had a torn achilles tendon. He'd been beaten and burned.  He was near death, but there were enough people who believed in him to try to save him. Eventually, he would lose a leg. This story, unlike many, has a happy ending. He found a forever home. We need to read these kinds of stories if for no other reason than to let us know that we can do something to help animals and maybe make people aware to stop the abuse that seems to be so prevalent in our society.

The Peace and Love Train by Tyler Rose and Kiley Sage Kincaid

This is a sweet story of the Peace and Love Train that travels around the world in search of extra special boys and girls. This is a story about how all children, no matter what they look like, how they learn, or how they are different should all be treated fairly and loved. The story looked a children with braces, who were mentally and physically different, whether they were too tall, or big, their skin was a different color or wore glasses. This story is to teach others that no matter how different we are, we are all made with love and we need to treat everyone the same because everyone is special in their own little way.
