Summary
When a small village's advertising column is to be replaced by a flashy neon billboard, only the heart and perseverance of two young children can save him and keep him in the town's center.
Morris is a very proud advertising column. Topped with bronze that has turned green over the years, he rotates in the center of a wonderful, small village and informs its inhabitants of thee important events happening in their tiny hamlet. From puppet shows and concerts to sporting events and the much ballyhooed circus, Morris is a respected member of the community whose role is essential...until the mayor and town advertising council decide to replace him with a neon billboard.
Can you imagine? Well, needless to say Morris is deeply hurt. Enough so, that he decides to speak out and ask village children Anna and Jason for help. He also prays to his guardian angel to protect him and bring back the love and respect of the villagers--he's not taking any chances! Anna and Jason clean him up, give him a fresh coat of paint and new advertisements, and start to spread the word about their community's formerly favorite citizen. Soon the town's residents realize how they have taken him for granted and neglected to honor him for all he has done. The question is, do they realize their neglect before it is too late?
My Thoughts
I look at almost every book I read through one of two lenses; what message can this book provide for my students or my grandchildren? In this case, for my students I could teach them about personification since the author decided to give the advertising column human qualities. This book also as a message about taking care of the things we have around us. We need to care for our environment. If we don't, who will. This is the second book I have read by this author and I am very please with her passion for teaching a message that is subtle, yet important. Another thing I really enjoy are her drawings. She is the illustrator of her books. Her colored pencil drawings are charming. That was the first thing my granddaughter noticed about the books. Her comments about how people were being mean and not taking care of Morris, told me she got the message. I whole heartily recommend Doris Rueger's books.

The Land of Whoo - Ryan O'Brien
Pages: 226
Source: I received a copy of this novel from the author for my honest review
Genre: Middle Grade/Young Adult Fantasy
What parent or teacher doesn’t want to see positive character qualities
in their children or students? As I read
this book I immediately thought of the IB (International Baccalaureate) Learner
Profiles we teach in my IB school. We teach
them that they should be caring, balanced, risk-takers, reflective, knowledgeable,
thinkers, principled, open-minded, inquirers and communicators. As I read this book I found that it had all
of those qualities throughout.
Michael Henry’s adoptive parents have fallen on hard financial
times. Students and adults today could
definitely relate to that. They have to
sell their home and move away. Michael
makes a new friend named Savannah. One
night Michael has a dream where he sees a cavern full of portals to other
places/worlds. This is where I started thinking about the learner profile. To act on his dream Michael had to be open
minded and an inquirer. He and Savannah
go through a portal into the Land of Whoo.
That screamed risk-taker to me.
Michael learns that his grandfather King Titus is the ruler of the Land
of Whoo but is oppressed by the Dark Wizard.
He is the one who killed Michael’s parents. To help the people of the Land of Whoo he
sets out to find a powerful medallion that had belonged to his parents. It isn’t enough to find the medallion. It will only work for him if he can pass five
different tasks. One of the conditions
is that he can’t show any malice for anyone or anything in the land of
Whoo. He has to be balanced, caring, principled
and a communicator to accomplish this.
To accomplish everything he must do he is going to have to become a
critical thinker who is reflective of his actions.
Now before you run away because I have brought so much education into
this, think about it. Don’t you want
your children to read books that bring those qualities to light? I do.
It definitely helps that the book is action packed to help carry the
reader along on this ride. The great
thing is this is only the first book in this series. I can’t wait to put it on my shelves at
school.

Ella the Pink Elephant by Doris Rueger

Genre: Children,
Picture Book
Pages: 40
As a child, Ella was the star animal of one of the world's largest zoos. Her keepers dressed her in pink silks and shawls, while friends and admirers flocked to her side. Yet as all creatures must do, Ella grew older. She grew tired of all the work it took to remain at the center of everyone's attention. After many years, Ella wanted to be taken to a retirement zoo where she could rest and enjoy her days in peace.
My
Thoughts:
When
the book arrived my granddaughter immediately asked me to read it to her. This is always a good sign as she loves books
as much as I do. She immediately got the
message. She loves the color pink as
much as Ella does. She understood that
it doesn’t matter what you have on the outside, it’s what is on the inside that
make people love you. This was a wonderful way to teach this lesson. The story was wonderfully told and the
drawings were beautiful. I know two wonderful
children who will love receiving these books.Born and raised in Germany, Doris Rueger attended college in the United States and graduated with a master's degree in literature and journalism. Hannah thinks tonight's Passover
Seder will be the same as always. Little does she know that this year she will
be mysteriously transported into the past where only she knows the horrors that
awaitStudent's Thoughts:
I think this is a good book. I
found something that was alike to me.
Most times I forget some things like Hannah. Hannah and her parents go to her
grandparent’s house for a get together to tell what had happened to them. They drive there in the car. Hannah had to take care of the babies. Aaron and her
start talking after she gets there about what has happened to them. Hannah doesn’t know where or how she’s
remembering them but, she does. After
they finish, Hannah goes to the bathroom.
When Hannah comes back nobody noticed that Hannah had come into the
living room. She sits back down and
continues to talk to Aaron. I think this
book is very good. It is so good I am
going to recommend it to my brother since he usually likes the books I read.

Student Saturday: Every Human Has Rights by National Geograpic, Mary Robinson
Student Reviewer: Madison D
I think if someone does not believe in your culture or religion or if you think you do not have rights to do things, you should read this book. I made a lot of life connections to this book and other people I see around me. This book is right you have rights to do things and no one can tell you differently. This book tells you about how you have religious, cultural freedoms and rights. So you shouldn't judge other people. I thought this was a touching and amazing book.

Princess Rosalind has the most atrocious manners. She and her dragon sit at the table slurping
their food. The Queen sends them off on
a quest to learn manners. This was a
cute book. The lessons were subtle yet
put in a manner that parents could have a great discussion with their
children. I think this would be great
for all families with young children.

This was a book that is hard to classify. Although it is written similar to a picture boook, the main characters are young teenage girls. This might be good for middle schoolers. The story is told through verse and puns. I loved that the author used vocabulary that was unique and more difficult. There are explanations of unfamiliar things at the bottom of the pages. I think the girls in my class will really enjoy this book.

Demonkeeper Series by Royce Buckingham
When I was first asked to review these books I was hesitant because of the titles. When I read the summary I knew these were books I had to read. The publicist sent me the second and third books to review. I knew I had to read the first one as well. Sit back and enjoy this review. There is so much I would like to tell you, yet to do so would spoil it. So after reading the review, rush out and get your copies. I know I will be recommending these books to my students.
Demonkeeper

Genre: Middle Grade/Young Adult Fantasy
Nat is a young teen who finds himself in charge of a house full of demons. As a young child he became apprenticed to a Demon Keeper known as Dahliwahl. When Dahliwahl disappears it is up to Nat to keep the demons safe and under control. The demons in his house range from playful to malicious. With no other human in the house Nat decides it is time to find other teens. He meets Sandy, a junior librarian and thus begins their relationship. While out on a date two young homeless boys, Gus and Richie break into his house. They inadvertently let loose the most dangerous demon in the house, appropriately called "The Beast". The Beast eats Gus and goes after Richie. This is how Richie and Nat meet. We are also introduced to another Demon Keeper called "The Thin Man". He has turned evil, and managed to take over Nat's house. The question is, can Nat, Richie and Sandy take back the house before it is too late? I loved the cover of the book. The images of the demons remind me of so many different movies with creatures similar in looks, like Monster, Inc. or Monsters vs. Aliens.
Since I teach middle school kids I know that they will love the idea that people get eaten while also knowing that this is not real scary. I believe both boys and girls will love this book.
Demoneater
Kindle approximately184 pages

Genre: Middle Grade/Young Adult Fantasy
This book started off in the 1700's in Ireland. George is writing about his master's return. His master, the Demon Keeper had disappeared for a month and they thought he was dead. He tells George he survived by eating the bugs that infested his ship and yet he lost all of the demons he had captured. George realizes something has changed in his master. His last entry tells us his master has become a demoneater.
Fast forward to current Seattle and we once again find Nat, Richie and Sandy together. When a giant cement troll under a bridge disappears they realize that something is seriously wrong in Seattle. We meet Lilli,a young hippie type who is also looking for the Troll. Sandy is jealous of Lilli. Nat realizes that Lillie is a Demon Keeper. She considers herself a collector. She collects all of the colorful peaceful demons. Nat on the other hand hunts the more mischievous demons. Lilli has been keeping a secret. She only tells Nat, Sandy and Richie about it when her demons are killed. She has known for quite some time that something was stalking her and now she has led it to Seattle. Sandy is furious and points out that Nat, his house and his demons are now at risk. You must read this book to find out if he can rescue them and find out who or what the Demoneater is. I loved how the tension was taken up a notch. I am finding that I don't like Nat very much. He tends to talk down to Richie at times. He is also a very insensitive boyfriend. Lilli came across too strong toward Nat at the beginning of the book. This dysfunctional family of four seem to have real issues with relationships. One thing that made me really love this book was the way the author used demons to explain events in history. Demons Wedge and Char were responsible for the Great San Francisco earthquake and fire, or the Great Chicago Fire. I loved getting a better look at some of the demons.
Demonocity
Kindle approximately 184 pages

Genre: Middle Grade/Young Adult Fantasy
Nat is gone. He is on a personal quest that leads him someplace he wasn't expecting. In his absence, demons and chaos have taken over Seattle. Nat, Lilli and Sandy are trying to put the house back together. I loved it when Lilli took the remains of demons killed by the Demon eater, and she smears them on the walls of the house. They swirl together to create beauty inside. Sandy has continued to translate the journal to learn as much as possible about the history of the Demon Keepers. I thought the author was brilliant in bringing her into the story. She is not a Demon Keeper, yet she is passionate about saving, and hunting these demons to set things right. We see a different side of Lilli in this book. She has never looked at the negative side of demons. Now she has to fight against them to help out. She does this even though she doesn't want to. She realizes friendship is important, now that she has friends. To tell you any more would spoil it. I know I've left you hanging. So, go get your copies now.
