Book Signing

Yesterday was a wonderful day.  I was one of nine local authors at “Mixon’s Fruit Farms” participating in a book signing.  Mixons is a half a block from the school where I teach.  I had several students show up just to show support.  A retired teacher friend and one of my students actually purchased my book.  Mixons has fresh fruit and gifts, a gift shoppe and cafĂ© with wonderful orange ice cream and a lot of fudge.  They give grove and wildlife tours, they  have venue rental space, and multiple events and festivals.  I will be participating in the Orange Blossom Festival in March.  It is a two day event from 9 – 5.  I was told that they have 10,000 plus visitors for it each year.  I will have a vendor spot.   I met some wonderful authors.  I’d like to tell you a little bit about my new friends.

Liam McAuley is the author of “The Musicians” and “Cake Eaters and Charlie McGuire”.   I have the privilege of  reading and reviewing his book.  I hope to have the review up in the next few weeks.

Shari and Marty Medley had two wonderful picture books.  The topic is alligators.  If you live in Florida you definitely need to read books about alligators, even the fiction ones.  Check out “Alligator Tail” and “The Adventures of a Lifetime”.

Mary Grant is the author of three Books “The Secret Keepers”, “The Truth Keepers”, “The Justice Keepers”.  These books take mystery and suspense to the next level.

Brenda Darnley Martin is the author of the “Treasure-Hunt Fish Book Series”
She is available for classrooms or parties including book-readings.  You can find her at www.treasurehuntfish.com.  I will be reading and reviewing one of her books.

Diane Adams Taylor has written the book “Circles in Time”.  You can read the first chapter of her book here

Diane E. Robertson is an author, editor, speaker, and an instructor.    Her current books include “The Madcap Misadventures of Monica Mayo”,  “Coming Apart”, and “Adventures in Writing”.  She offers manuscript editing, leads workshops, and offers creative writing classes at our local community college.  You can check out her website at freelancewritingbydiane.com

Nancy Lee Hurley was my table mate.  She has two books out.  The first is her book “Close Encounters of the European Kind”. It is  about her life in Europe while her husband was on assignment there. Her second book is called  “Close Encounters with My Lord”, and  is all about relationships with God through the thick and thin.  I am happy to report that I will be reviewing her book within the next few weeks.

There was another lady there with her therapy dog Regis.  I unfortunately did not get her card.  Hopefully I will see her at the next book signing on the 15th of December.

I really enjoyed myself.  Meeting and talking with other authors is a wonderful way to spend a weekend.  Check out these wonderful books by locals authors.  You won't be sorry you did.

Book Summary

As 16-year-old Grace recovers from tragedy, her science class is chosen by Agent Sweeney at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to help with research on the new "Red Wolf Reintroduction Program".

While she’s excited about helping with the conservation of the endangered wolves, Grace knows this means being outdoors in the worst winter recorded, in a place she no longer feels comfortable. It also means working closely with Wyn (her ex) and his annoying girlfriend (Skyler), a girl whose idea of getting close to nature is picking silk plants and growing fake plants.

After a couple of wolves show up dead, Grace almost quits. However, when a fellow project team member goes missing, Grace continues the assignment under a renewed suspicion that someone might be sabotaging the conservation program. She quietly begins to hunt for clues.

Little does she know, she is being hunted too.

November Giveaway Hop

Great News!  The November Giveaway Hop is officially underway.  This hop is hosted by:  I Am a Reader, Not a Writer and Tristi Pinkston. What is a blog hop?  You hop from one blog to another to see what is being offered as a giveaway.

My giveaway is open only to residents in the United States.  I'll be giving away several books this round so pay close attention.  All book blurbs are taken from Goodreads unless otherwise marked.  This post is quite long so when you've finished reading about the books, scroll to the bottom to find out how to enter.
.

For my younger audience, students, parents of young kids I offer the following:

Flat Stanley:  The Flying Chinese Wonders - Jeff Brown
Ouch! Stanley accidentally caused twin acrobats Yin and Yang to take a tumble, right before their Chinese New Year show. Yang's foot is broken—but luckily, Flat Stanley is flexible enough to take his place. To make up for his mistake, Stanley travels to China to help out—but can he learn all their amazing tricks in time?

Underworlds #1:  The battle Begins - Tony Abbott
There's something lurking under Owen's school. . . .
Owen Brown is your average fourth grader. Or he was, until his best friend, Dana, disappeared. Right in front of his face. Through the floor of the school.  Owen's average life has turned upside down.
He's determined to find Dana -- before anyone realizes she's missing. Owen sets out on a mysterious, mythological rescue mission with his friends Jon and Sydney. But what none of them know is that Dana's disappearance is part of a much larger riddle.  And they're at the center of it.

Judy Moody Girl Detective - Megan McDonald
Judy Moody is in a mood. A sleuthing, Nancy Drew kind of mood. So what’s a WBMS (world’s best mystery solver) to do? Go find a mystery, that’s what! And she doesn’t have to snoop for long: when Mr. Chips, a beloved crime-dog-in-training, goes missing, Judy Drewdy and her chums, agents Dills Pickle (Frank), Spuds Houdini (Rocky), and James Madagascar (Stink) find themselves smack-dab in the middle of a real life, scare-your-pants-off whodunit. Was Mr. Chips stolen by dirty dog nappers? And why are chocolate-chip cookies disappearing all over town? Watch out for red herrings—along with clever references to classic Nancy Drew mysteries—as Eagle Eye Moody and company are hot on the case.

Powerless - Matthew Cody

Twelve-year-old Daniel, the new kid in town, soon learns the truth about his nice—but odd—new friends: one can fly, another can turn invisible, yet another controls electricity. Incredible. The superkids use their powers to secretly do good in the town, but they’re haunted by the fact that the moment they turn thirteen, their abilities will disappear—along with any memory that they ever had them. Is a memory-stealing supervillain sapping their powers?
The answers lie in a long-ago meteor strike, a World War II–era comic book (Fantastic Futures, starring the first superhero, Johnny Noble), the green-flamed Witch Fire, a hidden Shroud cave, and—possibly, unbelievably—“powerless” regular-kid Daniel himself.  Superhero kids meet comic book mystery in this action-filled debut about the true meaning of a hero.

For my older readers I offer you the following:
The Map of Time - Felix J. Palma  This is an ARC
The Map of Time by Felix J. Palma. Set in Victorian London with characters real and imagined, The Map of Time is a page-turner that boasts a triple play of intertwined plots in which a skeptical H.G. Wells is called upon to investigate purported incidents of time travel and to save lives and literary classics, including Dracula and The Time Machine, from being wiped from existence. What happens if we change history?

The Wounded Heat - Adina Senft
When a business offer turns into something more personal, Amelia is torn between what logic tells her is right, and the desire of her heart.
A widow with two small children, Amelia Beiler is struggling to make ends meet. She is running her late husband's business, but it's not what she was raised to do, which is run a home. When she gets an offer for the business from Eli Fischer, she's only too relieved to consider it-especially when it looks like Eli's interest might include more than just the shop. But when she begins to experience strange physical symptoms and is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, it's difficult not to question God's will. If she pursues the treatment she believes in, she risks going under the bann. But how can she allow Eli to court her when she can't promise him a future.

SUV’s Suck in Combat – Kerry C.  Kachejian  (2 Copies)
From Back of Book:  “SUV’s Suck in combat is an authoritative, first-hand account of the attempt by the U.S. Corps of Engineers to rebuild Iraq n the wake of the 2003 invasion.  Kerry Kachejian documents the enormous effort and sacrifice required to undertake a massive mission that dwarfed previous nation building efforts in scale and complexity.  He and his colleagues belonged to the Army that we had, tackling a mission few had foreseen, and without most of the resources they needed to succeed.  The inspiring stories he relates shed light on the early period of Iraqi reconstruction an bear study for how the United States can do better in the complex wars of he 21st century”

High Treason - Samuel Oakes  (2 copies)
The future is here for a bankrupt nation gripped in the throes of the plague, and the corrupt government is in charge of the vaccine. Young Amish man Enos Yoder faces the greatest crisis of his life when his father refuses to accept the compromises the Bishop has made, and his mother lies on her deathbed. Will the family be consumed by his father's stubbornness? Regina Owens, the liberal minister in town, is having her normal world rocked to the core by what is happening. She wonders why a man would lift his own hand against what is most precious in life. Will Enos recover from the brutal shock when his girlfriend is taken from him? Will his faith, backed by five hundred years of teaching against violence, survive the hate rising in his heart? High Treason is a story of love, bitterness, and treason, rising up in the heart of a man and in the highest corridors of government.

Freedom Giveaway Blog Hop Day 7 Author Sandra Stiles (Me)

Today is the Last Day of the Blog Hop - Enter By Midnight to Win

Today I am going to toot my own horn.  This is something I seem to have a little bit of trouble doing.  I had to work on my National Board Certification a second year because I missed passing by 9 points.  The problem??  I did a poor job of blowing my own horn.  So here we go.  As of May 2011 my book Steps to Courage was available on Amazon.  I did everything backwards.  I had decided to self publish when I obtained my agent Mary Jackson.  She encouraged me in my writing process.  The story behind my book is this.  On 9/11 I sat in my classroom with a group of sixth graders watching the events live on TV.  Our principal ordered our televisions to be left on all day.  A very distraught sixth grader asked me if there were kids like them in the Towers.  I didn't have an answer.  I tried to reassure my students that everything would be okay.  However, I didn't know if it would or not.  A year later my students wrote essays about how they had seen the world showing compassion through adversity after the events of 9/11.  They then created quilted wall hangings as a way of translating their thoughts and feelings into those wall hangings.  Something kept nagging at me.  I couldn't get that question out of my head about the possibility of kids being in the Towers.  I wondered what would happen if they found themselves in the Towers as the events unfolded.  I talked through the idea with my husband for several years.  Finally he handed me a legal pad and told me to stop talking about it and start writing it.  That is how my story came about.  I place three teens with previous problems in the Twin Towers while they worked on community service hours.  The rest of it is in the book.  To read the blurb and watch my trailer click here.  Then come back and sign up to win some fabulous book on the Freedom Giveaway Blog Hop.  Good Luck to all!  You have until midnight to enter.  I will choose winners using Random.org for each book Friday and I will notify the winners by email.  You will have 48 hours to contact me with your address or I will choose another winner for that book.

Freedom Giveaway Blog Hop Day 6 - Author Marlayne Giron

Today I am spotlighting author Marlayne Giron.  I first became aware of this author when I entered a giveaway for her first book The Victor.  At that time she kept saying she was a one book author.  I wondered how anyone with her talent could only write one book.  I am happy to tell you that she has gone on to write more.  She has graciously donated a signed copy of her book Make a Wish.
This is a wonderful book.  If you go to her Make a Wish Blog Site you can see how this came about.  When she asked me to promote the wish fulfillment stories to my students I thought that it would give them the opportunity to see how a writer works.  Instead I ended up telling her a wish of my own.  I miss the times my older sister and I would spend talking by phone, visiting and crafting together.  She passed away three years ago.  When I told Marlayne that I wish I could have just one more day with her she turned my wish into a story in which I was able to do just that.  Her stories have a healing effect.  I really can't say enough good things about this book.  I am hoping there will be a book two.  I know for a fact that she has been working on a paranormal Amish Fiction book called In Plain Sight.  If you click here you can view the trailer to it.  I've had the privilege of reading and editing this book and can't wait until I can post my review of it.  Until then all I can say is this is one author you need to keep your eyes on.  I will be giving away one autographed copy of Make A Wish so sign up for your chance to win.  There are no strings attached and you don't have to follow me, although I'm always looking for more followers.  It is NOT a requirement.  Enjoy your blog hopping and good luck!

Freedom Giveaway Blog Hop Day 5- Jerry Eicher

Jerry Eicher has never been fond of writing outside the lines.  As a young boy, a research project on hog farming started him on his career in writing.  Instead of writing a typical research paper, he turned it into the story of Willie the pig and took the reader on a tour of Willie's life from birth to death.  Jerry is still working outside the lines.  Today he is a well know Amish Romance Writer.  He can be found on Facebook or at AmishReader.com.  He has quickly become one of my favorite's in the genre of Amish Fiction.  So I am offering up two of his books:  A Wedding Quilt for Ella and Ella's Wish.  Good Luck to All of you and keep hopping.  Come back tomorrow  as I spotlight friend and author Marlayne Giron.

From Goodreads:
Ella Yoder's wedding with Aden Wengerd and the building of their dream house is set for June. But when Aden is suddenly taken from her, Ella begins to doubt God's love.
When her family pressures her to marry the new young bishop, Ella asks for six months to heal from Aden's death. Meanwhile, Aden's brother, Daniel, helps Ella build her dream house based on a drawing by Ella's sister, Clara and now incorporated into Ella's wedding quilt.

From Goodreads:
Ella Yoder has moved into her dream house. In the stillness of the great house, Ella ponders her options. How is she to survive on her own? How will she ever forget Aden? What is to become of her?
Two would-be suitors soon make their intentions known, but Ella is unsure of her own feelings. As she agrees to take care of Preacher Stutzman's three motherless girls, Ella's heart is touched by their love for her. Could their affection be the answer to Ella's quest? Can God speak through the love of a child?
Readers of Amish fiction will fall in love themselves with Ella Yoder and hope with her that she finds the love and happiness she seeks.

Blog Hop Day 4 - Ed's Journal by Jordan Crowl

I became aquainted with Ed's Journals when my friend and agent recommend I friend him.  I trust my agent explicitly.  When she recommends books to me she has had several recommendations from others.  I'm not just a writer but also a book blogger. So before I will recommend a book I must read and check it out first.  Jordan's books are simple graphic novels that run about 36 pages.  These are excellent books to teacher character education.  The most fascinating thing is the reader is given a choice to answer the problem that Ed faces.  Character qualities such as dependability, loyalty, and honesty can be found through simple drawings and examples in stories that children of all ages can identify with.  I loved these books and look forward to passing these on in the Freedom Giveaway Blog Hop.

Freedom Giveaway Hop Day 3 Book Spotlight - Anessia's Quest

Let's take a look at Anessia's Quest today.  I recently reviewed this book.  You can find my review here.
Karen is one of those talented authors that draws on the experiences around her.  She is a wonderful foster mother to two wonderful girls.  She has strong Christian values that can be seen in her book.  Anessia's quest is one of those books that grabs you from the beginning and takes you on the ride of your life.  This is a ride that requires a lot of tissues.  You will follow the life of a young girl who realizes at a young age that she is and has always been unwanted.  She finds that she can rely on God when things get really tough.  This is a touching story.  In my opinion it is a book that everyone can enjoy. It is a book of hope and survival and God's love.  So check it out.
