The Road to Nyn – Brian Michaud

Young Adult, Fantasy
I received a copy for this blog tour in exchange for my honest review

Summary
In a land where magic is outlawed, a young boy is living a double life. Although Kay is training to be a knight, he has been secretly studying the forbidden ways of magic with Alamin, a powerful but eccentric wizard.
After passing of the Trial of the Rings and being raised to squirehood, Kay has decided to tell Alamin that he is going to leave his magical studies behind. And why not? Kay hasn’t ever cast a spell without something going seriously wrong–like the random appearance of frogs or hungry wolves–besides, Kay could be banished from the kingdom just for associating with Alamin.
Kay’s plans are quickly obliterated when a horde of goblins attacks his village and captures his family and friends. Now, with his home lying in ruins, everything has changed. Along with Alamin and Felix, a self-serving kleptomaniac sprite, Kay embarks on an adventure that takes him across the Kingdom of Gaspar and into the dark and treacherous caves of the Goblin Realm. What Kay doesn’t realize is that his journey is leading him on a collision course with the Lord of Nyn – a being so powerful that none dare face him...not even Alamin himself!

 My Thoughts
Knights, magic, and a quest to save his family. What more could a reader want? Add goblins that kidnap a village and the plot thickens. Kay has worked hard on his path to become a knight. He has a secret.  He has been learning magic.  Magic has been outlawed.  Just hanging around with the wizard who is training him could be enough to ruin his chances of knighthood.  Kay weighs the possibility of this loss against the possibility of being aided by the wizard in saving his family and the other villagers.  This was one of those stories that grabs you and carries you along on a journey that you absolutely don't want to end. I always look at books like this to see if I think my students will read it.  I can't wait to get a hard copy to put on my shelves for next year.  I was given an electronic copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.  I definitely loved this book and look forward to reading more  by him.

Title: The Infinity Program
Author: Richard H. Hardy
f Genre: Science Fiction
Paperback available at: Amazon

Book Description:

Jon Graeme and Harry Sale are unlikely friends. Harry is a world-class programmer, but his abrasive personality alienates co-workers. In contrast, Jon is a handsome and easy-going technical writer, the low man on the IT totem pole.

Sharing a love of nature, the men set out together, planning to go their separate ways--Jon on a hike and Harry, fly fishing. Three days later, Jon arrives at the rendezvous point, but his friend is nowhere in sight. When Jon finds Harry unconscious on the floor of a cave, Harry claims to have been lying there the entire time. But he is neither cold nor hungry. What Jon doesn't know is that Harry fell into an underground cavern, where he came into contact with an alien quantum computer.

Back at work, Harry jettisons his regular tasks and concentrates exclusively on inventing new operating language to access the alien system. In the process he crashes his office's Super Computer and is fired. Jon convinces the company to give Harry a second chance, arguing that the system he has invented will make them millions.

Jon has no idea what havoc Harry is about to unleash.

About the Author:
Richard H. Hardy was born in Glasgow, Scotland, during a week of relentless bombing raids just before the close of World War II. The day he was born an incendiary bomb fell on the church across the street from where he lived, so he is fond of saying that he entered the world with a big adrenaline rush.

His family later moved to England and then on to America.

After college Richard bounced through a series of temporary jobs as he traveled around the country, wanting nothing more than to write fiction. A job driving a library van allowed him free time to write several short stories and work on a novel.

He and his wife moved to New Hampshire, where he took an entry level job at a software company. He was soon promoted to the technical writing department and ended up producing over 500,000 words of online documentation. After a few years he was promoted to the programming department and ended up as the Senior EDI Programmer, creating EDI maps and writing UNIX scripts and troubleshooting on AIX systems throughout the U.S. and Canada.

After he retired, he started writing fiction again. The Infinity Program is his first published novel.

Cover Reveal and Giveaway: The Fallen Pharaoh by S.W. Lothian

BLURB – THE FALLEN PHARAOH
It's time to reunite without the burden of a perilous quest.  Let's just sit back, relax and enjoy the moment.  The idea is simple enough.  What could possibly go wrong?
Tragedy sends a shockwave across the land, and rumours begin to surface and spread.  Has the very thing that protects the Pharaoh gone missing?  An ancient Egyptian legend foretells that without it, the safety of the Pharaoh is doomed.  Khafre calls upon his trusted friends from the future to seek out the fabled Ankh of Life.
It's a quest to discover if the legend is true.  If it is, our heroes need to find the ankh and return it to its rightful place.  The awesome foursome from the future are in the race of their life - against the passage of time and mysterious forces that want them stopped.
This edge-of-your-seat adventure weaves its thrills and mystery through the very crossroads of time itself.  From ancient Egypt, to the centre of time, to modern Paris.  The gang of four must face their most amazing encounters so far.
The pressure is on.  Who is trying to stop them?  Will our heroes overcome the danger and challenges of their newest quest?  Only time will tell.
The time has come for the legend to rise and protect.

ABOUT THE QUEST SERIES
The Quest series is an exciting time-travel adventure like no other, which has won over fans from all ages.  Kids love it because it takes them on an action-packed ride, and adults love it because it reminds them of their childhood dreams of adventure.  It has been described as Harry Potter meets Percy Jackson meets Indiana Jones meets The Mummy.
The underlying essence that I have tried to inject into this series is maximum adventure, maximum action, amazing settings, awesome humour and relatable characters.  I wanted my heroes to be just everyday kids, who find themselves in the most awesome adventure of their lives.  These books are so vividly burnt into my mind, that I can see the settings, smell the air, and feel the emotions of the characters.  It has taken me years to get the story to where it is now, and there are still a couple more books to come.  My dream would be for the series to become loved enough to spawn a CG movie or two or more (A very wild dream, I know - but one that I'll hold onto - ya gotta have dreams.).
JJ, Linc and Rani are just three normal kids who have found themselves in adventures that none of them could ever have imagined.  The series is an edge-of-your-seat tale of time-travel that spans from modern times to ancient Egypt.  The past and present collide as our heroes are tasked with saving history (and the future) from turmoil.  It's not an easy job, especially when their arch enemies have an army of living statues, known as Uberdiles at their side.  Over the course of the quests, our heroes meet many wonderful characters and learn about their own strengths, the importance of teamwork and loyalty, and how trust each other.
Last year I was fortunate enough to travel to Singapore and I visited Universal Studios (I'm a theme park fan).  One of the key things that attracted me to visit the newest Universal theme park was that I knew there was an ancient Egypt zone, which housed one of my favourite rides, The Mummy.  Well, as soon as I arrived in the zone I felt just like I had stepped through time and into my books.  The ancient Egypt theming was awesome and the detail and scale were stunning.  There were even some giant statues of one of my characters, Anubis.  To read more about my visit, click here to jump to my blog post.
I'd be honoured if you would give the Quest series a go and read each of the exciting quests.  I'm confident that you'll find that it will take you on an adventure that will knock your socks off.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
S.W. Lothian is a funny and cool guy from Australia. His kids call him ‘Phil Dunphy’, because he reminds them of the dad from Modern Family.  He isn’t sure whether this is a compliment or not, but he takes it as a compliment.
As an imaginative kid he dreamed of creating exciting worlds and funky characters, and thought he’d be the most famous person to ever do this.  He loved to draw and was dux of Art in High School.  Top of his dream list was to be an animator.  Along with his friend (who went on to be a semi-regular in an Aussie TV Soapie) they would make their own comic books – it kept them entertained and out of trouble (most of the time).
He loved watching all those classic cartoons on TV - Scooby Doo, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Road Runner (surely, Coyote would win one day), Wacky Races, the list goes on and on.  All he wanted to do was to create cool characters and stories by hand.  He was sure his animation dream would happen - It was to be the perfect career.
BOOM!  Then reality hit.  As weird as it may seem, there were not a lot of opportunities for world famous animators in his home city.  The dreams were parked as reality and the corporate world beckoned.  Then, 25 years later, the long-held dream to create erupted like a jam donut in a microwave and S.W. started writing children's fiction for kids.  Perhaps his awesome stories will become so popular that they will be animated one day.
When he writes, it’s for his kids.  He writes stories to excite them, inspire them and teach.  Stories with awesome edge-of-your-seat action and adventure scattered with fun.  Stories that let adults remember their own childhood dreams.
His dream has evolved over the years, from superstar cartoonist – to corporate soldier – to proud parent – to children’s writer.  In his wildest dreams, his books will be extremely successful.  However, it’s one step at a time.  A waterfall starts with a trickle; he hopes his books are his waterfall.  He’s building that waterfall – one book at a time.

Unplug & Read Blog Tour and a Book Review

Imagine going about your day without the trappings of screen media: no phones, computers, tablets, televisions. Preschoolers today spend as much as 4.1 to 4.6 hours per day on one screen or another. Including multi-tasking, children 8 to 18 spend 7.5 hours per day with screens. This Spring, Random House Children’s Books is issuing a challenge: UNPLUG & READ during Screen Free Week April 29 – May 5.

Inspired by Dan Yaccarino’s Doug Unplugged (On sale February 12, 2013) about a robot who discovers that the real world trumps the virtual, we are launching Random House Unplugs: A Screen Free Week promotion. We are committed to supporting teachers, librarians, booksellers and parents in their efforts to encourage children to UNPLUG & READ during Screen Free Week from April 29 – May 5.

Screen Free Week is the annual celebration from the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) that encourages turning off screens and turning on life. CCFC’s Screen Free Week is a creative response to growing public health concerns about the unprecedented time children spend with entertainment screen media—television, computers, video games, and smart phones. Studies show that Preschoolers spend as much as 4.1 to 4.6 hours per day using screen media. Including multi-tasking, children 8 to 18 spend 7.5 hours per day with screens. Unplugging for one week provides an opportunity to reset media habits, establishing a healthy, sustainable tradition of media consumption in households and schools.

When Random House invited me to be a part of this tour I was excited to accept. I am a teacher and I'm always looking for ways to get students to read more. I have been promoting and preparing my students for Screen Free Week since the beginning of the month. I am always encouraging students to get outside. I want them to learn to use their imagination. Students who learn to use their imagination bring so much more to the books they read and become better writers. Random House also provided me with a book to read and review. I was thrilled they took the time to see what would be a good fit for my blog. I am even more thrilled to introduce you to the book that I will be recommending not only to my class, but to the media specialist at my school.

My Book Recommendation for Screen Free Week/Unplug & Read

Bee by Kimberly Newton Fusco
Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers
Pages: 336
Source: received review copy in exchange for my honest review
Genre:  Middle Grade Realistic Fantasy

Young Bee is an orphan.  When her parents are killed while working for a carnival she is allowed to stay on with Pauline.  Pauline raises her until their boss sends Pauline away. Then her friend Bobby, who runs the pig races goes off to work in a factory.  Bee has always felt alone, but never as alone as she does now.  She is born with a birthmark that covers one side of her face. This subjects her to taunts and teasing.  Now her protectors are gone.  Bee decides it is time to leave the carnival and find a permanent place to stay.  She and a dog she had found set off until they find the perfect gingerbread looking house.  There she finds Mrs. Swift and Mrs. Potter.  Mrs. Potter has been visiting her since her parents died.  The problem is no one else can see her or Mrs. Swift.  Through their love and lessons Bee must learn to stand on her own and become the person she was born to be.  You must read this book.  I was sucked in emotionally form the beginning.  You want to pity Bee, but at the same time you want to scream at her to stand up to those who bully her.  It is a story that takes place during the time when America is at war with Japan.  Families are separated and people are bullied for all kinds of things.  Being different brought out the bully in people you wouldn't expect to be bullies.  There are lessons for everyone to learn.  Kids will love this book because they will be able to relate to the different types of bullying.  They will learn because they will be able to sympathize with the victims.  This is a book that not only kids but adults will enjoy.  If I could make it a rule every school would read this book at the beginning of the year.  In many ways it reminded me of the book Wonder.  If you liked that book you will LOVE this one.
