13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher

Genre: Young Adult Realistic Ficiton

Student Reviewer – Elizabeth

I don’t know why, but I really could connect to this book. The whole time I felt bad for Hannah Baker, the girl who killed herself. Suicide. She swallowed pills. Deadly pills. She could take life no more because of school and friends and home. But, before she died she recorded seven cassettes, thirteen tapes (each side approximately) to tell each person (thirteen of them) why they were involved in making her commit suicide. I wouldn’t recommend this to people who like light stories because this is not one.

Student Saturday: Crazy Dangerous - Andrew Klavan

Genre: Young Adult, Realistic Fiction
Student Reviewer – Elizabeth

This book was hands-down absolutely amazing. One of the best. This story has a plot twist at every corner. This book is an emotional rollercoaster. My eyes were wide open at the plot twists. I gasped at the surprising things, and I felt like I was there. I really enjoyed this book. It was about a kid named Sam Hopkins. He is a fairly normal kid, until one day in the middle of running; he gets slugged by three thugs. They teach hi things and eventually he realizes what he is doing is wrong, and when he tries to get out of it, a murder case suddenly is involved. Then there is this girl who has a “mental disease: and Sam thinks she is some crazy prophet… as you can see it is really hard to describe. So, you’ll have to read the book to find out. I would recommend this to the action packed mystery lovers.

Student Saturday: The Dark Zone by Dom Testa

Student Reviewer: Isaac
Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction

Alexa, a crew member of Galahad has recovered from a coma after having her appendix removed. However, she’s had weird visions believed to see the future. As strange aliens that have little info about themselves make contact with Galahad everyone’s fate may be sealed.

It felt odd for me to try new things and that I knew nothing about it. Galahad’s crew members have similar feelings about the aliens. Readers who like thinking about the plot and questioning everything,  would like this part of the story. Each Galahad book has an original plot which still continues to baffle me.

Student Saturday: The Cassini Code by Dom Testa

Student Reviewer:  Isaac
Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction

The Galahad crew are on their way out of the solar system through the Kuiper Belt, a massive ring of several objects orbiting the sun. With thoughts an alien they contacted the Cassini might be helping humans fight Bhaktul disease. Many have started to decide to go against the idea of heading to the solar system Eos. The council members will have to make hard choices between right and wrong.

In the story, some crew members go against the protagonists. I’ve felt like this when some of my friends have been rude to me sometimes. I’d recommend this to readers who like drama and conflict.

Each book in the series has its own atmosphere and plot, another great book!

Student Saturday: The Web of Titan by Dom Testa

Student Reviewer:  Isaac
Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction

As Galahad and its crew pass by Saturn’s moon, Titan, they must pick up a pod meant to carry two passengers, a cat and someone else. The crew would be prepared for this considering the stowaway who almost killed them all months ago. But, when one is missing in the pod with no explanation and mysterious events occur, could it be possible someone, or something exists on Titan?

In several parts of the story, the crew have no idea what’s going on and feel confused. I also feel like this sometimes.  This issue of the series seems great for readers who like a feeling of mystery and unknowing. This is a great sequel that’s just as original and fascinating.

Student Saturday: Matched by Ally Condie

Student Reviewer: Sarah F
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

From Goodreads:
Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate... until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow

Sarah's Review
I really liked the way that this book was written. The chapters were short, and the story flowed nicely. It wasn't choppy, and the ending didn't seem too soon.  The world that the characters live in is also very creative. The way that the Society runs things is very imaginative and fun to read about. I enjoyed reading it so much that I read the whole book in two days!  I liked this book a lot and am definitely going to read teh rest of the trilogy. If you choose to read it, enjoy!

Student Saturday: Waterfall by Lisa T. Bergren

Genre: Young Adult, Adult, Fantasy
Student Reviewer: Sarah F.

When I checked this book out, I had imagined it to have a different plot line. I thought that Gabi and Lia would have had to find a different way to travel back, or they would've gotten kidnapped, or something.

there were some very inactive parts of the book, too. I wouldn't go so far as to say they were boring, but in some chapters, not many things happened.

But, my favorite part was the battle at the end. That particular section was extremely action packed and kept you on the edge of your seat the whole time.

Overall, this was a very creative and fun to read book with humor and action, love and war. It also gives you an interesting insight of how the author imagined 14th century Italy to be like, If you ever get a chance to read this book, I definitely think you should.

Student Saturday: The Eye of Minds by James Dashner

Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction
Student Reviewer: Isaac C.

Michael, like all teenagers spends most of his time on electronics. However, he spends time in the VirtNet, a virtual universe wehre many nuisances in life are removed and everything is better, or is it? He meets a girl who explians a man named Kaine and about being trapped here, and Killsims, of course Michael shrugs it off thinking she's a lunatic. But, when the VirtNet Security kidnaps him, telling how they've been hunting Kaine for so long, he's with their coding skils. However, the the VirtNet, there are many mysterious things Micahel has yet to see.

I felt in the place of Micahel sometimes when he was overwhelmed when things would out of hand. I'd recommend this for readers into the futuristic setting and brain teasing plots. This is a great book by one of my favorite authors. I can't wait to read the sequel!

Student Saturday: The Comet's Curse by Dom Testa

Student Reviewer: Isaac

In the not so far future, a comet known as Bhaktul passes by the sun, leaving the remnants of the tail to be passsed by Earth. Normally this is a beautiful event. However, a deadly condition coincidentally occurs, leaving many to speculate that an unknown particle located in the tail is what causes this condition to shatter the healthiest human. There is an escape thoug, a respectable scientist, Dr. Zimmer, plans to send 251, fifteen and sixteen year olds due to the diseas not affecting teens below the age of 17 or 18, on humanities life saver Galahad. However, one of Zimmer's colleagues and close friends disagrees, so events could be bound to happen as Galahad travels to two planets light-years away.

I felt in the place of many characters because I can easily relate to their problems and how they react.
I would recommend this to any sci-fi fans who love to be on the edge of their seat and is always thinking about the plot and what's going to happen next.  This is an amazing and fascinating sci-fi book. What can I say?!

Student Saturday: Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen

Student Reviewer: Alexia
Genre: Realistic Fiction

Flipped is about a boy named Bryce. His family is new to the neighborhood. While they were putting their furniture in their new home, this girl named Juliana couldn't wait to meet the new family that's moving in. Juliana liked Bryce and Bryce didn't like Juliana. But, then over the years Juliana liked Bryce les and Bryce liked Juliana more.

I really liked this book because I think it is a good book on how the author describe the characters in tehbook and about how school drama goes. I liked Juliana and her family, Bryce, Grandpa and all the free spirits. They don't realy care what people think of them and I liked how they handle family situation.  I liked how they said "the choices you choose now will affect you in the future." I really liked this quote

Student Saturday: The Sacrifice by Kathleen Benner Duble

Student Reviewer: Amari B.
Genre: Middle Grade, Historical Fiction

This book is a historical fiction book.  It is about a girl named Abigail Faulkners. In the beginning Abigail is punished because she was racing. While she was running she was being inappropriate by making her skirt flap everywhere showing her legs. Then all of a sudden, her dad starts acting crazy and saying crazy things like someone was after him. This book felt very emotional to me because the family has to suffer because of the dad's actions. How would you feel if you had to deal with soemone like that? I would recommend this book to people who would want to sacrifice themselves for anyone or anything.

Student Saturday: Drama by Raina Telgemeier

Student Reviewer:  Amari B.
Genre: Middle Grade, Graphic Novel, Realistic Fiction

This book is dramatically realistic fiction. It starts out with this girl named Callie who is in love with a boy named Greg. But, later in school when she is putting up fliers for the play...these two boys named Justin and Jesse are interested in the auditions for the play. Later in the story Justin has a confession to make. This book is a little bit confusing and weird to me. Let's say there is TONS OF DRAMA! I would recommend this book to drama makers and...certain...uh....people!

Student Saturday: Heroes of the Holocaust by Mara Bovsun Zullo Allan

Student Reviewer Logan C.
Genre:  Non-Fiction

This story took place in Europe uring the time of Hitler and the Holocaust. The main characers are Jews in hiding and Non-Jews willing to help them.

The major plot points are the survival or capture of the various people involved. The brutality of the Nazis was peppered throughout the book.
A connection that I have is that I hope that if I were in a situation like that I soulc bd zabl to help. I would recommend this book to history lovers, but prepare yourself for an emotional roller coaster.  I hated this book because of the horrible truths that it revcealed. It is horrible that people could be so cruel to each other

Student Saturday: The Invention of Hugo Cabret

Student Reviewer: Logan C.
Genre: Historical Fiction, Middle Grade

The characters are twelve year old Hugo, Isabelle, the toymaker, the stations inspector and Hugo's uncle. The setting is at the train station, the toymaker's house, and in the toymaker's shoe.

the major plot points are that Hugo is taught his uncle's craft after he is orphaned. His uncle goes missing and Hugo has to keep the clocks working. He found an automator in the fire that killed his father. They realize that the toy maker was a movie maker in the past.

Some connections I had with this book is that Hugo is my age, and likes to explore, take things apart, and make new things. I would recommend reading this book because even though it's thick it is really a quick read. I thought the book was better than the movie because the characters seem more real. This book also uses real antique photos as well as award winning drawings.

Student Saturday: Bogus by Karla Oceanak

Student Reviewer: Darrell S.
Genre: Middle Grade, Graphic

Bogus is a funny book. I can sit there for hours and read this book. It's about a boy named Aldo Zelnick.  This is the sequel to the book "Artsy-Fartsy". The book "Bogus"  is about when Aldo, Jack and Bee find a ring. Aldo thought that the ring was super bogus. But, Jack thought it was real. When aldo had the ring he lost it. The next day there was an article in the newspaper. It turned out that the ring was real and someone had a $1,000 reward for whoever could find it. One of the best books ever. If you want to find out what happened, then I want you to read this book.

Teacher's Note:
This student was so into this series that his giggles and sharing with his neighbor, along with his, "You have GOT to read this Mrs. Stiles", prompted me to read Artsy Fartsy.  He was right, I loved it.

Student Saturday: The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate

Student Reviewer: Alexia R.
Genre: Realistic Fiction, Animals

I think this a a good book for everybody, even adults and small children.  This is a book about Ivan, a silverback gorilla who has spent most of his life in a small shopping mall in a cage. Ivan made friends over time like Stella who is an elephant, Runy who's a baby elephant and Bob a stray dog who spends a lot of time with Ivan in his cage.  Over time the animals became depressed, do you think they will ever get out of the small cage and get moved to a zoo?

This is an incredible book. It teaches a lot of lessons to people of how we treat animals for the good and for the worst. This book is really sad and funny and I recommend this for all ages because this book can teach a lot to people of all ages.

Student Saturday: Heat by Mike Lupica

Student Reviewer: Elizabeth B.
Genre: Middle Grade, Realistic Fiction

I really, really, really enjoyed this amazing book. This was definitely a turn around for me on my opinion of the author. This was an amazing story and plot because it was about this boy who loved baseball and he was living with his only brother and both of his parents died and they were keeping a secret. I would recommend this book to all sports fans, but especially baseball fans. It might be a little hard to understand because it was confusing because there was a lot of baseball language.

Student Saturday: Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan

Student Reviewer: Elizabeth B.
Genre:  Middle Grade, Fantasy

This series by Rick Riordan was one of the best I have ever read. I am amazed about how such a wonderful writer could produce something stunning. I swear, I could not stop reading it. I connected with this book by thinking how wonderful my life could be in this world, Greek, Mortal, or Roman. I have too many connections that it won’t fit here. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone especially one who doesn’t like to read – this will make them beg for more.  I loved how the settings were all over the world; Pompeii, Italy, and Athens, Greece. There is so much to say about this awe-inspiring book I can’t say enough about this truly unique book the story basis has high quality.

Student Saturday: The Year We Disappeared by Cylin Busby and John Busby

Student Reviewer: Elizabeth B.
Genre: Young Adult, Memoir

From Goodreads:
The extraordinary true story of a family, a brutal shooting, and the year that would change their lives forever.
When Cylin Busby was nine years old, she was obsessed with Izod clothing, the Muppets, and her pet box turtle. Then, in the space of a night, everything changed. Her police officer father, John, was driving to work when someone leveled a shotgun at his window. The blasts that followed left John’s jaw on the passenger seat of his car—literally. Overnight, the Busbys went from being the "family next door" to one under 24-hour armed guard, with police escorts to school, and no contact with friends. Worse, the shooter was still on the loose, and it seemed only a matter of time before he’d come after John—or someone else in the family—again. With their lives unraveling around them, and few choices remaining for a future that could ever be secure, the Busby family left everything and everyone they had ever known…and simply disappeared.
As told by both father and daughter, this is a harrowing, and at times heartbreaking account of a shooting and its aftermath, even as it shows a young girl trying to make sense of the unthinkable, and the triumph of a family’s bravery in the face of crisis.

Student Response:

I liked the book, but it was saddening. I would not recommend this book to people who like adventure. It was about a father who was a police officer, and he got shot in the face. He survived. Now the family has to hide in the shadow, away from the rest of the world.
